Intek Cutting Out
« on: February 24, 2013, 02:50:43 pm »
I have been having some issues with my 40ci Intek V-twin for the past few week during ice racing.  It will run great for 2 or 3 laps and then start cutting out at the end of the straightaway.  It is almost like the ignition is completely but briefly getting shut off with it getting worse and worse the longer I run it.  At first I thought it was a fueling issues because when I played with the choke it seem to stay running better.  So I drilled out the jet.  It did seem to run a bit better but still not cured.  So I tried replacing the fuel filter because it looked a little dirty.  Still no luck. Next I cleaned the carb and replaced the plugs still not completely fixed.  I also reset the coil air gap to .046 with no change. My engine is stock except for governor removal, ARC flywheel, EC air intake, exhaust header, 49 rods and springs.  I am running out of ideas on what could be wrong without starting the throw parts at it.

i don't see that you have tried a new, or different, fuel pump....i would try that before anything else. besides the fuel pump, it could be floating valves.

Could also be the coils heating up and cutting out, do you have another set you can try?

Thanks for the reply's. The way the weather is looking I will be done with ice racing for the season but I do have an indoor race coming up next month. Trouble is I have no way to test if the warmer temps will cure its problems before then. If it is the coils is it possible they can both quit at once? When it does cut out it completely dies not just one cylinder. A few times it has actually stalled so I think that would rule out the valve springs. If it does stall it takes a few more revolutions than normal to get it going again but it does eventually start. The stranger thing is that it has not cut out to the point of stalling since I have changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and cleaned the carb.

I will open up the fuel pump and check the wiring to see if I can find any problems.

I would also check the fuel line to see if it has came apart some on the inside. Outside appearance don't matter.

The last intek I helped fix with this same problem was the coil kill terminals were touching the block at times. Did you notch the cooling fin enough to clear the kill terminal. The vibrations of the engine eventually made the terminal on one coil touch at times.
