If Hoosier you want a 9-10" rim is what they recommend. On the 5.5 run a 6-6.5

Most kart tires recommend one inch wider rims than the tire size.  So the 8" tire would recommend a 9"  rim.  The 5.5" tire  6" rim.  These are only recommendations, so he was saying a 6" or a 6.5" wide rim for the 5.5" tire.  You can use what you want in order to get run out diameter and/or sidewall flex.

I ran my 11x5.5 tires on 8.25 wide rims before I went to front brakes and loved the way it handled. So as you can see they will work on a variety of widths  but most go 1" wider than tire. (second number in tire)
