tecumseh v twin build help
« on: September 26, 2012, 09:03:23 pm »
ok guys pulling season is about over and i am getting ready to tear it down and make a little more power. i am looking to make as much power as possible without any machine work. i know you guys dont like giving out all your secrets but any input would help before i sink some money into a finished pile of junk if done wrong. i am thinking as far as the heads go just doing a good port job, putting the ec mega flow valves, ec 260 springs, and matching retainers. i was gonna leave stock pistons with arc rods and the new .410 twin tecumseh cam fron ec and their copper head gaskets too. beings my heads are designed for the the 5/16 stems i read somewhere that there was some kind of shim or something to be able to use the valves from ec? does anyone have a part number for them? is there anything i am missing? is this a good combination? i pull with alot of kohler v twins and i am just looking to try to keep up. thanks for any help that anyone can give.

VKE sells push in bushings used on the star motors, buy those and press them into the 5/16 guides and use EC valves and retainers n springs and your set. As for the rest sounds like you have done your home work. The Indian will serve you well. Only thing you will have to adress now is the ignition, stock ignition will not keep up with what this new buiild will do.

Yup a Kohler is all about the money... The amount of money it takes for the kohler is exactly why I think they should be banned in our sport. NOW whale on me for that comment.. BUT be sure to start your own thread to do so....
This thread is about Tecumseh Build help not what we think about the Kohlers.

craftsmanpuller email me anytime I will help you all I can with them lil Indians Just remeber David slayed Goliath...

I'd get with George and see how big of a valve can fit in there. Are you running governed or un-governed? Remember you don't need to accelerate.

Ec goodies!!!! Buying all the best parts aint what makes em go there is more to it than that, regardless of whose parts one buys ya have to know how to work on them and tune them or any motor for that matter. They are NO different than any other motor other than the dual carbs. And yes they are at times tricky if one is not in the know.

NOW as I stated before BACK on subject....
1.7 intake will fit...If you dont change the exhaust.

well i have a extra tecumseh motor that im gonna build and leave the one on that tractor until it is finished. that engine that i have been pulling is completely stock. i have ported them heads a little but not much because at the time they were the only set i had. these heads are gonna be opened up as much as i possibly can without ruining them. and as far as the carb problems go you guys are talking about i too had these problems and made a custom intake to run a single carb like most of the kohler v twins. it really woke it up just with the carb change. i think it made it more reliable for sure. but just leave that out for now and get back to the core of the motor. is the ec cam a good cam or should i get a custom grind. i have seen some of georges videos on youtube and i might say i love that sound. you can really hearthe cam.

Governed or ungoverned? That's key for the cam.

JOSH since you know SO MUCH I highly advise you to get your facts straight......EC DID NOT BUILD this motor. EC Sold parts for this motor to Rex Crouch. I am personal friends with Rex and the whole family. I nor EC has ever worked on it. I am well aware of this motor. IT has been rebuilt since REX sold it. SO no telling whats in it. I Dont even know.
Governed or ungoverned? That's key for the cam.

ditto, my motors are open motors no govners, basically on the Super Modified. I have run the tilly carbs even. But I am back to the Tecumseh carbs be it that or the other changes I have made it runs better this year than ever. I also have made huge gains in my chassis to. If your on the govner EC cam will not work as the govner is removed.

of course no governor. it is different than racing though. when pulling you are hooked to a sled. you take off full throttle and ty to get up as much speed and momentum as possible to pull it furthur. so pretty much the more power you have the more rpms the engine will run because it is under a load. and the more rpms the faster and farther you will pull.

I understand the pulling. If done right the EC cam will turn 8 easy but the honey hole or sweet spot is around 67 to 7200. Its not about the HIGH RPMs like other motors the Tecumseh is a torque monster and if you use that its a monster.
