I just picked up a near new mower today with a 311777-0143. Is this the one without the weird balance deal? Is this a good motor to start with?
It was a Scott mower by JD. I must have the only orange John Deere in my county.

Eeewww..... No balancer is a good balancer. If rules state you have to run a stock motor, then ok.

I'm just trying decide what to start with. Looks like I'm back to the CV15. It has a completely separate balance shaft, and I've already turned the counterweights off of it. And to tell the truth, my 26 inch Kohler would kill this 31 inch Briggs. Hydraulics and all.
I need to have a mower ready to go in a couple months and I'm trying to decide where my motor budget should go.

use the kohler, youll love the torque you get from it over the briggs.

Hey
Sounds like you have the Briggs AVS motor. Just a hair different then the old Briggs OHV single.
Whatever the motor I can balance the crank and even set you up with a Crank kit price too.
