I had neither the money nor need to build mine to complete mil-spec. However, I built a used .300 WM Savage 110FP into a consistent threat on a 30" diameter target at 1000 yards. "Minute of truck" at that distance is all I was going for. If I wanted something that would do the same thing but on a 12" target at that distance, I'd be in for another $2,000 - $3,000. There are a lot of used Remington 700's and Savage 110's out there that you could build like I did mine. If you've got $4,000 for this project, just bite the bullet (no pun intended) and buy a Savage 110BA in .338 LM and slap a Leupold Tactical scope on it. But for "only" $3,000 more you could have a Barrett MRAD in the same caliber. So like I've read on so many threads on this board, you are limited only by what you want to spend and what you want to end up with.

I've been looking for a used 700. I didn't realize there were parts available for the savage 110.

To borrow my earlier analogy, the Remington 700 is the small-block Chevy, and the Savage 110 is the new LS engine. You can argue all day about which one is better, but they both get the job done. There are a lot more parts available for the 700. Like I said, though, I didn't have unlimited funds for my build. If you strip it down and add-on aftermarket parts, you can build the Remington into a better rifle. The Savage is closer to perfect in stock form, though; so to save money, I kept the original Accu-Trigger and barrel. Try www.gunbroker.com. That's the ebay for guns. If you're wanting to find a used 700 and basically discard everything but the action, then rebuild it from the barrel nut out, you can usually find one on there. If you're doing that, look for one that has the stock all beat up. You'd get an even better deal if you find one with a bent barrel LOL.

armslist.com is also a decent site.
Most rifles (probably 90%) are more accurate right out of the box than they person behind the trigger...

I've been looking at those. How accurate is it at 50-100 yards with 45 LC? Does it throw a decent pattern with 410 with the screw-in smooth choke?
mine is real accurate at about 50 yards. that is where i got it sited in at and i shoot skeet with the 410

Not to beat this thread to death, but I thought some of you all who expressed interest in the topic of guns would find my write-up on a gun project I undertook a couple of years back interesting. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=543087And FordFan, as a suggestion for you, if you like working on things, find something old and make it new again. Taking something apart, making it better, and putting it back together again give you a sense of ownership and pride above and beyond just buying something new.

Hello Mr Fort_ Maceo if you take a look at the picture next to my name, that is just some of my work making old things new again. Except for taking the body off of the frame the entire car came apart piece by piece repaired, painted then put back together.
Now back to the subject I am really glad to see all the interest that all of the people have showed. In my opinion whether for hunting, protection or for fun, guns are a part of our lives and need to be respected.

Heck the way the cops watch my house and having that "unmarked" squad sitting just down the road... I probably don't need a gun for protection....
