What is a legal chain guard on an ARMA super mod? can you use a motorcycle style guard or does it have to be enclosed like most of them I see, if so why? they run an open chain on 1/4 midgets. "road legal" bikes only have a top guard.

All exposed shafts must be guarded with a minimun 1/8" thick metal, chain guards must cover top and the chain be directed downward if they break. If I had a Super Mod and as I see most of them have the chain very near to parts of me that are quite dear, I would totally cover the top of the chain so no part of my body would come in contact with it.

I broke a 35# chain racing karts. Engine turning over 9000. Chain came through chain guard, chewed up my right elbow and thigh. Worst pain I have ever experienced. You ma want to err to the safe side on that one.

do you think that was because of the #35 chain that it came apart, i know we are running #40 chain on all our mowers, but sheesh that just sounds horrible!

Don't quote me on this but I think most 35# and 40# chains have the same rating or close. Some super mod builds are running 35#. Either way make sure it will deflect chain down if it does. I am not sure why my chain exploded. A rock could have got thrown into sprocket.

And keep the guard tight to the chain! The more room between the chain and guard, the more or a "run" it can get at the guard before tearing into it.

If you bend a piece of 1/4 steel round stock and attach it to the inside of your guard as close to the chain as possible in the center, it will usually spit the chain out without trying to tear through the guard.

If you have an aluminum guard (like most) you can do the same with 1/8 steel flat strap stock and pop rivet it on.....
