Coast to Coast 2012 IMOW Build
« on: March 25, 2012, 06:33:50 pm »
Building my first mower to hopefully race a few times this summer. I'm in Boise ID and while the sport has decent representation in Idaho Falls and Twin Falls, it seems to be underrepresented here in Boise. So without the help of people locally, I'm combing heymow to learn the sport.

Here she is in all her glory. 11hp Coast to Coast. Good strong running mower. Don't know if I paid too much but $100 seemed fair at the time.

I've built a few custom bikes and a rock crawler and consider myself to be a good fabricator so I'm really looking forward to tearing it apart and busting out the angle grinder.

Got a EC Front Axle and Rear Axle Kit coming in the mail. Also got a solid Peerless 700 on the way. Seems like everyone says that the chassis construction will make or break you, so I thought I would just drop the change and do it right the first time. I'm a sucker for pictures, so I'll definitely be taking a lot as I make progress.

I think that is a mid 80's MTD. Should be loads of info on the forum and plenty of pics of builds with chassis very similar to that. Does that have the 'Castle Greyskull/Skellator' looking grill? I really think those look great coming down the track.

Sounds like you have a great plan, looking forward to seeing it come to fruition.

Read,Read and Reread rules concerning seat to fender height vs tire clearence. Could be tricky since seat does not sit on fender pan.

it also depends on what association you are building for as in uslmra or arma or whatever.

Those are both MTD's..I have actually built two Super Stocks out of those two exact mowers, a Coast To Coast and a Ranch King...How funny huh?

If I am correct, he stated in another thread that he is building to USLMRA Open Super Stock rules. Soooo.....
Read,Read and Reread rules concerning seat to fender height vs tire clearence. Could be tricky since seat does not sit on fender pan.
That is pretty much a non issue...

I bought the mower from Fordfan.

Then I wrecked it and killed the frame, Lloyd bought the tins back and it got turned into.....

Yeah, I know, you can't see the mower with all them cute ornaments draped on it.....
but the paint is even better this time.

Ok, I found a better pic.

I pretty much wrote the rule book for this class, if you have any questions you can Call, PM or e-mail any time.

My Best advice, build the chassis to the S/P Rules, then later on It is simple to drop some more engine in it and bump up to S/P.

Got a EC Front Axle and Rear Axle Kit coming in the mail. Also got a solid Peerless 700 on the way. Seems like everyone says that the chassis construction will make or break you, so I thought I would just drop the change and do it right the first time. I prefer to use the 2 piece rear fenders, but thats me. I have used both.
Keep in mind the older MTD's had the front of the motor pan squared off, meaning they don't have the typical 7* caster already built into the newer ones, and you will need to incorporate that into your new axle.

But with my adjustable front axle from EC, that won't be an issue right? I can just square up my axle, burn it in then adjust the caster on the end plates right?
