Some early model 40 cube heads were "taller" with about a .020 raised "lip" around the whole perimeter of the head. Along with a thick copper head gasket, you can run a small amount of pop-out (.010) to help compression after relieving the area between the valves and the cylinder bore, which will improve flow.

Are you making your own copper hear gasket? I don't know that anyone was making them.  If so who, please?

Just source the old style non graphoil head gaskets( no longer made) and use them, or trace the original onto some copper of your preferred thickness... .020 to .030 is sufficient.
