You should not eat grain fed beef. Cattle are Herbivores, not designed to eat grain(s). It messes up the ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s. Cattle should eat (and be finished on) grass and herbs (what you think of as weeds).

Sort of while we're on the subject of cattle meat, my Uncle is a dairy farmer and according to him about most of the ground hamburger out there is from retired dairy cattle. Yum yum!

Easy fixes.. Buy Certified Angus Beef! Better yet, buy it on the hoof! I've had bison burger, but what im wondering is how far west do I have to go to get other cuts of bison?

I had Bison in Colorado. Didn't really care for it because unlike beef cattle, there's not a lot of fat in it and the fat is what makes meat good in the first place ( IMHO)

I won't argue with you on what they are adapted to eat but I sure will on what tastes better: Grain fed or grass fed....

Buying on the hoof is the best way. Unfortunately most cant afford it. A fat steer is going to cost you $2000. And then you will have $600-$800 in processing. But you get 600-700 lbs of meat. If buying in the store only buy USDA graded meat. Only buy prime or choice. Select is OK but I don't care for my meat to be that lean. Angus don't taste any different than Herford if fed the same diet. The reason you hear Angus all the time is that most Angus beef is corn fed and the purebred Angus association (not sure what it is really called) does a great job of promoting their brand.

To chime in on the beef debate, we haven't used ground beef in about 10 years. I have all of the meat - except for the tenderloin - from the two deer I shoot each year ground up. Anything you can do with ground beef you can do with ground venison, and it contains no artificial steroids, chemicals, or hormones. It costs about $1-$2/lb, even less if you process it yourself. My wife and 8 year old daughter love deer spaghetti, deer meatloaf, deer burgers, etc. If anyone wants my recipe for taking out the "wild" taste that some complain about, let me know.

Yes Paul the Angus Association does a great job promoting their product. What many don't realize is the requirements for being "stamped" CAB (Certified Angus Beef) is black hided and grade choice. Well you and I both know there are a lot of other breeds and crosses with black hide that will grade choice. I've even been told by packing plant employees that if they are not meeting their CAB quota the black hide part sometimes gets ignored.

I am going to buck the trend here and agree with Aaron. I ONLY buy on the hoof Holstein BEEF!! It is some of the best beef I have ever had and I have raised and had it all. We buy from a local farmer here who is also a friend and customer.

I will say that one of the guys I race with gave me some homemade sausage from a pig his daughter raised and had butchered. It seriously made the stuff from the store taste like crap. That was the best sausage I've ever had.

I'll second PK, Herford is the only beef we eat. And as fort_maceo said, for about 6 months out of the year I live on deer, between deer stew, deer burgers, deer steak, deer bacon, deer roast, anything you eat with beef in it, mine has deer in it, most people complain about the "gameyness" of deer meat, but honestly to me it tastes pretty darned good, I love me a good beef steak but deer steak is right up there on my list. The "game" flavor to me makes shootin the deer worth it, otherwise I'm just shootin smaller and quicker cattle, and if I'm gonna do that I'll just get some beef.
