At 3/8" you should be able to drill out to a 13/64" and tap to a 7/16" fine thread..(same as bottom bolt)...That would give you more holding power... But get 'er in there a good 1 3/4" and use an 1 1/2" long bolt...

You may want to mic the keyway out on the shaft before you start drilling and tapping Mowcephus. From the looks of the picture below, you're treading a mighty fine line there already! And, I would definitely put the flywheel on it and seat it firmly before drilling and tapping, to provide support while tapping it. Not to mention you'll know how much to grind off the back side of the keyway when you get done that way!

To do that I'll have to take the engine back apart and have the crank out right?

All things considered, I would suggest in the motor with a common hand drill. Take your time and keep it straight as possible. It's not like you're going to wreck a good crank. Were it not for the fact the cut on it looks like bandsaw, I'd suspect it was done in block last time, and it very well may have been.

Again... keyway and flywheel in place and firmly seated. Otherwise that side is going to be weak and your drill will be subject to drift that way. You'll want to start with a bit that fits snug inside the existing threads, and run a pilot hole to depth before drilling to size.

pilot hole
5/16" bit will fit perfectly in 3/8"NC thread pattern and follow thru as you drill deeper.....and can be followed with 13/64...

This is assuming the "first" hole is centered and plumb...(slight adjustments can be made with pilot drill)

Just checked that and I think I have about a 1/16" at the most to spare.  Dont' think that will be enough to drill it to get a 7/16" threads in there.

Instead of 13/64 to tap it to a 7/16" wouldn't I need a 25/64 bit?  Was thinking 13/64 was for 1/4

Yep your right...25/64" for a 7/16 NF...

Not sure where the 13/64 came from...had it in my head when I first answered...maybe I was thinking 13/32"... :worried:

But I guess that's better than if I told you to drill it "Too Big" ..
