Rebuilding a 401A tranny.
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:04:41 pm »
I've got a 401A tranny that the corners are worn off the straight cut gears. Anyone have a parts supply & the ability to build 1 correctly besides Don G who no one seems to to be able to contact?

They not suppose to have square corners, otherwise it won't shift smoothly. There is a parts list on here.
I thought I would post the numbers again with their Peerless numbers, just to make it clearer.

Ref# Part #      Cross #     Manufacturer
2      530105    SCE-1295  Federal-Mogul
3      780085    BH-108     Torrington (Timken)  X2
4      780088    BAM-128   IKO                         X2
6      530105    SCE-1295  Federal-Mogul
45    788035A   471255     Federal-Mogul
46    780071     TC1018     INA
49    788042     727410     Federal-Mogul          X2
50    780084     TC1220     INA
57    780093     S7K          Timken
The numbers for the thrust washers are as follows,
Ref# Part #      Cross #     Manufacturer
37    780072    TRA1018    Timken
51    780051    TRA1220    Timken                    X2

These numbers work for both the 350 and 400.
If you have a company called KAMAN close by you can get these bearings and seals from them.

OK That's good to know. Maybe it is not as bad as I thought. Thanks!

Use about 24oz. of a good synthetic lube oil like AMSOIL and it will last and run cooler.

I know this thread is a little old, but I am trying to seek clarification. Are the part numbers Snowman18 referenced for race prepping the transmission or are they just OEM substitutions for no-longer-available parts? I'm looking to race prep a 350 but there is very little information out there.

If I recall, those are the parts Snowy used when setting up the transmissions that he used for race.

Those are substitute numbers.  You will need 3 BAM-128's for the 350 you only need 2 for a 400.  Amazon is a good place to look.   Just prepped a couple in the last few months
