I am trying to find out what kind of tractor this is for a friend, I think it is a Sears Suburban, but not sure.  Please let me know what you think.

Looks just like the one I had mine was yellow and it was a suburban. Mine had a 8hp tecumseh and plow and disk and mower deck too. Awesome lil tractor.

That is what I was thinking, but the way the seat is mounted kinda threw me off, could be something someone jerry rigged at sometime.

The frame is a little different than a suburban, along with the belt drive system.

At first glance, I was inclined to agree with George. I too had a yellow one. But after further investigation, I would have to agree with THawley. I knew Sears to make this type unit in yellow, blue, and orange. (i know, it could've been painted red) but even moreso, I never knew the Suburban to NOT have the high/low transmission in it. I could be wrong, but several of our neighbors had the Suburbans, different colors, but all had the granny gear (high/low range) transmission that I do not see on this one. If there are any numbers on it anywhere, that may give a better clue, especially if the model number begins with a 917. XXXXX. This would indicate a Roper-made Sears unit.

I have found out that the Suburban did come like this one without the high low tranny and no headlights in the grill. I think they called it a custom 10 or something like that. I think it was the only model that came with the kohler eengine. most came with a a little indian or a Briggs.  It is really hard to tell for sure this thing has been through the mill.

As for the transmission it is the same one that can be found in the massy fergerson 7 & 8 as well as the john deere 60 and 70 they hold up good providing you lock the rear end we always ran a 6 inch pulley on the tranny and a 4.5 adjustable pulley on the motor.
