I know this is old but wondering if there is a way to tell if you have a steel bevel gear by looking at it?  Have a couple short bevel gears and am building an all steel 700 with bearings and want to use the thrust washer setup, just want it to be steel

Rodney sent them to  me to put on for you Tom.

Tom,

I couldn't get my Reply to download with the pictures, so Marc said he would.

In these two pictures, the gear on the left is a new steel (ST) input bevel gear from an 820; the right gear is a new powdered-metal (PM) gear from an MST 200.  I'm not sure how much detail you can see in the pictures, but the ST gears are usually a dark gray color whereas the PM gears are a bronze/copper hue.  Worn/used gears may be more difficult to see the original colors on.

Also note that, if you can see them, the ST gears show pre-heat-treat machining marks; the PM gears do not.  And...the internal splines on the ST gears have an angled lead bevel to facilitate inserting the broach to cut the splines; the splines on the PM gears are part of the mold and do not require a bevel.

Lastly, it is a little difficult to see in the second picture, but at the 12:00 o'clock position on the back side of the PM gear, there is a code letter "stamped" into the flat part of one of the teeth (it's actually part of the mold); ST gears rarely have letters stamped into the teeth or gear body.

    I hope this helps.

 Sincerely, Rodney
