YES MINERAL SPIRTS WILL! JUST TO CUT DIFF GREASE USE GRUBBYS MIX. USE THE MINERAL SPIRTS IN THE PARTS CLEANER.  THAT GREASE CAN KILL ANY CLEANER.

Scrape out the big chunks. Soak the rest of the tranny in FRESH mineral spirits. The gunk will be gone.

We use some good stuff in our parts washer. Its called aviation stoddard solvent. It will dry without residue and works just plain amazing. We get it 10 gallons at a time for like 60 bucks at our local hardware. But remember, nothing in 15 gallon quantity will be 'cheap' so don't instantly get a case of sticker shock. ;)

Check the shelf where you buy your 'mineral spirits', usually right next to it is 'paint thinner' read the label of that, if it says 100% mineral spirits, you just saved yourself a few bucks. Now it is slightly different in that 'paint thinner' isn't as refined as true 'mineral spirits', so it can be compared to the difference between 87 octane and 93 octane gas. But for cleaning parts..... paint thinner is my choice.
