24 hp els 725 chrome ring question
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:16:59 am »
got one that is smoking in one jug, I have heard that these have inherent air filter prob's. if I aquire this engine should I go back to chrome rings or is there a way to put cast ones in it ? would like to build this up for a race motor.........I think that there has to be a special hone done for the chrome rings? wassup with chrome valves...haven't had one of these apart before....

THE ELS STANDS FOR EXTENDED LIFE SERIES. HEAVY DUTY AIR FILTER, LONG LIFE OIL FILTER ECT. CHROME RINGS? NOT SURE BUT IF IT HAS THEM YOU DO NOT NEED A SPECIAL HONE. THE EXHAUST VALVES MAY BE MADE FROM STALITE. OTHER THAN THAT ITS THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER INTEK.

Chrome rings are hard. They need more finer scratches to seat them in. Finer grooves also hold more oil later. Moly rings are in the same boat. I would try to get moly rings. They take heat better, for those temp swings.

I would check the head gasket on the smoking cylinder first.
If it has blades I'm not interested.

it says right on the engine 'chrome rings and valves' for what thats worth..just wondering if I can simply re-hone it and use regular pistons and rings has someone done that? these engines had a problem with the air filter :censored:'y from the git go.briggs eliminated the 'yellow clip' retainer and went back to bolts on the air filter in following years.
its not the head gasket....

if this motor is worthy I gonna build a super-mod with dual carbs to play with.I'm trying to do a low budget build just to play around with this thing while I'm building the chassis.

I had the same engine and bought regular ole rings for it, 49 cube rods and used the original pistons. Just honed it and dropped it all in like normal. Ran great for what it was!!
