boring bar
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:30:20 am »
where is the best place to buy an adjustable boring bar for a mill? Need 1.100 inches. The ones that I have find are quite pricey, unfortunately thats probably going to be the case. Any setup tips from you machinists out there?

Thanks

Tim

I have looked for a cheap bore bar to but couldnt find one. I always thought I would try a hone to go 30 over one day but have yet to get that far, I think it would take a while.

Not only will it take a while-it will not be round anynmore, a hone will not remove that much material and the bore still be consentric

I went .030 over with a hone once on an old Johnson outboard.  I had two junkers laying around, and was attempting to throw the parts of two together to get one on the cheap.  The one with good pistons was .030 over, but the one with good block wasn't.  I used a drill press, started with the coarsest stones i could get, used lots of oil, and eventually did get there.  I wouldn't recommend this for a race motor though, the thing ran for a few weeks, but eventually threw a rod.  I'm sure you can't get the bore true enough going this route.  More of an experiment for me.

Horizontal mill not very deep, about .400 inches I have a rotary table could probably set it up to just use an end mill

I am machining the holes in the aluminum piece to mount the clutch basket, gonna use the original gear to line up the holes on the rotary table, the holes need to be a bit over 1" round

How would you guys do it
