How can I find out the difference between the different transmissions? For instance, does a700-070a have steel gears? Fine spline output shafts? How many shift keys? Or a 700-079, 700-083?
  Thanks, Kevin

The #s on the case isn't a guarantee of what's inside. Sometimes they have been rebuilt & the gears replaced.

700-078A is a coarse splined transmission, but I haven't found a PDF
with the part number for that shaft.
