So will the 20hp V twin do ok?
« on: September 25, 2006, 04:38:12 pm »

Is there any "Do's" or "Dont's" with this engine? I want to keep it reliable, and leave the internals untouched. It will be used for local races with out any RPM rules. So should I modify the govener or leave it alone? Is there any air filter modifacations that are worth while?

Yup its a great motor, You won't like it though it can be made into a real scary hotrod engine. So you might as well just send it on down to me. As for parts what ya want. Air filter (k&N) and adapter will run you 90.00. As for not touching internals, a cam wouldn't hurt. The stock ignition is junk. Best thing to do is get the billet flywheel it then uses 12hp briggs coils, will need to diode isolate them, but will run great. Stocxk coils once hot start missing around 4500. Stock carbs are too small for it to run any kinda rpms but if you don't put a cam may be ok. Won't start without choking it though unless you get the bigger carbs and have the internal jetting modifed. Full set of carbs built ready to go will run you 240 each.

Won't start without choking it though.

So that must be why the original mower had a seperate choke, seemed kind of weird to see a choke on a newer Murray (2001) mower.
This year I dont want to get crazy with the engine, first I have to get the racer built and ready for the middle of next month. Maybe next year I can spend some time on the engine.
But thanks for the advice, it's good to hear this engine will do OK.  :D
