What is the number on the top of the piston. I have noticed that number does not match the number on the box. Can the number on top of the piston be crossed to a part number? I have several piston without the box. Thanks

Big Al,i believe numbers stamped in top of piston maybe a lot # ,no way to cross to pt#

Thanks for your answers guys, I did find in another post that number isn't a part number. Will 499998 be the 0.020 over rings for my piston? Is file fitting oversize rings to stock pistons the way to go?

499998 is.020 for your piston,i am not a fan of filing oversize rings to a standard bore, each ring is made for a specific bore,so filling oversize rings to fit standard bore, just adds more ring drag and makes rings out of round in the bore

What rpm's are you running?
I have seen many new engines that only lasted a few hours@ stock 3650 rpm and others with hundreds of hours with no problems.maybe the ones that don't last are out of spec to begin with.

Ring set used after 01 is pt#696403 fits 696397 piston
Before 01 is or #499996
By your date code your motor is a 99

Also the # on top of the piston is not a part# fyi

Briggs Flathead / Re: Model 28 rod in model 25

I was told a model 28 rod was interchangeable with the 25, and I just spent $130 just to see its too long. Do I need a different crank or just find a 28?

It does work, your problem is your using a stock 25 piston , with a tall compression height, you need the 792307 avs piston with 1.032 compression height, then you will be ok

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Push rod length
« on: January 08, 2019, 10:20:48 AM »
Thanks for those tips!  I'm at that point with an INTEK 44.  The pushrods are smaller in diameter than those in a Model 31, so a 1/4" die barely marks them.  I'm on the hunt for a 10-24 die, but might give the solid barstock method a go.
To be sure of the objective of this exercise, we are aiming for the rocker arm to be at 90 degrees to the rocker arm stud when on the base circle (valve closed) part of the cam.  Correct?

as my earlier post said, use the stock 44 aluminum push rod to cut and thread 1/4"x20 die, very simple task

Looking for some advice on how to measure and install the cut to fit chrome moly push rods on a vanguard engine, thanks

I use the aluminum push rod cut it take about.375 out of it ,then thread both ends and use a 1/420 union nut.Now you have an adjustable push rod to measure the proper length
