Title: New SUPER MODIFIED Single build.
Post by: George Herrin on June 19, 2011, 05:36:07 pm
Well me and Jake has kicked it in high gear on the build. Single Super mod. It has a GX390 built and sponsored by Precision Cams. Did not take pictures of what we started with which basically was two Murray frame rails. But we have made some good progress over the last fewe weeks and will try to catch you up on it. Here are a couple pictures will get more later. Will be ready to race at the next event. 6/9/2011 at Full throttle Speedway in Carbon Hill ala.

Engine mounted and mocking up steering column

A stepped back look at it trying to picture the end look in my head.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0616112218a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0616112218a.jpg)

Over all view. basically all we have left to do is wire it chain guards fuel tank run brake lines and bleed and mount hood. its coming out real good. We used deck halves same deck as on the Super Mod Twin. Love the look. Mid 70 box frame fenders got those from rooster. Steering column is from Jegs 3/4 hollow tube. steering suppoerts is from a cut up Kart chassis. And what we are most proud of the uxhaust exits the grass chute. While running it will look like the deck has the blades turning. better pictures below.

Side view gonna be a nice ride we think. We built it around Jake as he will be driving it the most and Joe woodside will drive it till Jake takes over. has an EC steering wheel and a ARC quick release hub. Had to make an adapter so it would work with the 3/4 shaft. Used a 3/4 pully hub from TSC and weld a washer that fit the shoulder then drilled and tapped for steering wheel bolts.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111340a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111340a.jpg)

a look from the rear
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111341.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111341.jpg)

Here is the steering linkage setup. Its just like the Twin works great so why change.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111341a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111341a.jpg)

a more up close look at the exhaust. Trying to keep it a free flowing as possible and think we did so it is 1-1/4 O.D and as you can see in the next two pics will exit thru frame into the grass shute of deck.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111341b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111341b.jpg)

here you see it going thru frame, the clamp holds it to the section going thru frame which is welded to frame.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111342.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111342.jpg)

Outside the frame in the grass chute is the end of pipe. Should sound great and look cool blowing the dirt from the chute of deck.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111342a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111342a.jpg)

here is the flywheel side of motor as you can see it sits down low in chassis and will help with the low center of gravity yet will be easy to remove and work on.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111345.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111345.jpg)

Jack shaft is APS  but I used 1" bearings hold up better... Used bushings from TSC to shim down to 3/4 used a hub and aluminum sprocket from APS bolt on split 3 bolt easily changed. primary chain is 35 secondary is 40.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111345a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111345a.jpg)

View from rear sprocket and chain is close to wheel but thats not a bad thing either.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111345b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111345b.jpg)

here is a view of the rear chain setup under the fender with tire off
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619111347.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0619111347.jpg)

and lastly a look dwon the chain towards jackshaft sprocket.

Hood is sitting there we wanted to get a look in our heads... Will have it mounted tomorrow
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0625111951a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0625111951a.jpg)

Here is the fuel cell. and a general view of it as we tested it. I made a top plate for the motor and mounted fuel pumnp on it.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0625111953.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0625111953.jpg)

Weld tabs on the column support for starter button and kill switch
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0625111952b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0625111952b.jpg)

A general view of everything from the right side.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0625111952a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0625111952a.jpg)

We could not find the gas cap for the MTD tank so I had a fuel cell for Jr. dragster and the top after measuring would work. SO the  mounted that and used the foam insert from the fuel cell also and we are very pleased at how it come out.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0625111952.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=0625111952.jpg)

It runs and drives great though.

If you look closely it is setup so I can open the valve on bottom and let the oil drain back into the motor after the race IF it blows any So far it has not.

Hey George looked through your photobucket and I see a fresh track, yours? How big? The supermod looks GREAT!

Fresh track is Stevenson, AL...  This is where the All American is going to be this year.

From the All American Thread...  Track is 180 ft straights, 30 foot radius turns, 30ft wide on straights, 40 foot wide on turns.

In the ARMA Super Modified or USLMRA Open classes, this motor fits the class legal.

so they only have to come from a lawn mower in lower classes?

I thought it says of lawn mower origin for a reason. my question is what lawn mower did it come in?

I would guess a Honda walk behind or commercial.  I have seen very few Honda mowers, and the ones I have seen have water cooled engines.

I kinda figured the overseas thing was a possible explaination. I am the tech guy at my Track and someone asked me if I had seen your supermod single yet? I said "yes saw some pictures of it on facebook looks like a real nice mower" he says can I build one like it for here we race under ARMA rules. I said " I don't see why not" and he says but I don't think motor came in Lawn mower can I still use it and be ok. I told him I would look into it. I spent a lot of time looking at equipment today with Hondas to see if I could answer this question. I had to ask and find out. Thanks George

George , that catch can idea was an idea we at Mac racing have been using for for 8 years. It will work well. You can also use a fuel pump to return it to the motor while you race. That's what we do now. The Honda will not puke alot of oil anyway. There all kinds of tricks you can come up with. You just have to be ahead of the game. Can't wait to get on the track and see what its got.

George I know this is an old thread but why did u use a jackshaft on this machine. I'm building an mtd chassis for a local club and am using the 420cc predator clone. I wasn't going to use a jackshaft but am I missing something???

Not George,     Shortens the chains and also gives your more gear ratios to play with.    Most run 35 chain to jack shaft and 40 chain back to axle.   Biggest thing is to keep the chains short.  They live longer .
Title: Re: New SUPER MODIFIED Single build.
Post by: George Herrin on June 01, 2014, 02:18:03 pm
Trying to get the ratio without a jack shaft is very hard.  And as above chain length.
