Title: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: trbinrat on February 12, 2011, 08:46:07 pm
Rather that making new threads for each part or tractor that I work on I figured that I would post It all in one. I'm involved in building 6 tractors ( 4 jp's, 1 mod-xr  and a super) so a build project thread would be tough.

I will give some description's as I go and welcome all  constructive criticism.

I spent some time on the lathe last night and made my rear wheel hubs. Here's some pics of what I have so far. I still need to split them and put the holes in.

Here's one of the Jp's were working on for my friends daughter
It has a foote  6 speed and a 12hp briggs. It's also going to have a an axle mounted brake hat.

Here's what I'm starting with. AYP Craftsman for the new  Mod-XR class that were running at our track.

I'm waiting on the rear tires in order to make it a rolling chassis.

Finished  the rear hubs today.  I wish I had more money than time  They took a lot longer than what I thought they would take. If I were to sell them I think I would have to get $300. :bash:

(http://i1025.photobucket.com/albums/y318/trbinrat/th_11-4rearhub.jpg) (http://s1025.photobucket.com/albums/y318/trbinrat/?action=view&current=11-4rearhub.jpg)

Also finished the trans plate

And cut some keyway's in a solid axle for a transaxle

Thanks

The only bracing I have in it at the moment is a 1" square tube running from one end to the other on either side. I will be adding more as I go. I still need to put in the steering column support and the trans plate.
I will post a pic tomorrow of the underside.

Are you planning on connecting the stiffeners to the front axle?
Title: Re: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: trbinrat on March 07, 2011, 09:16:27 pm
Yes. I ran out of time the other night and had to get some primer on it before it turned to a pile of rust. Been wicked (Mainer for a lot ) humid here and the frame was sandblasted.

Ok so I got my front end together and my ackerman is backwards by 5 degrees. If I place the tie rod in the same holes on the spindle arms.  I know the is a thread on here about it and how to correct it but I'll be darned if I can find it.  Any help would be great.

If I tip the arms out more would that correct it.

No matter what the shape of the arms is, to get the ackerman correct with a front tie rod the tie rods must connect outside of the kingpins. In other words, the distance from center of center of the tie rod heims must be longer than the center to center length of the king pins.

It's a 9/16" impacted swivel socket.  I turned down the ends of the 5/8 rod to press fit into the socket end and the same on the 1/2" square drive end. After fitting in the tractor it will get welded together.

I'm thinking this might not be legal? ARMA rules for sheet metal are as delivered except for trimming. but I have seen it done before in one of George's builds but that was a super and this is a Mod-x-R.

We were experimenting with some ideas. I just like the idea of the fender over the tires like a stock tractor

I did the exact same thing to mine. I was told its OK to widen the fenders as long as you make it look stock again.

Just be sure you give those tires enough space under that fender, to "grow" under acceleration. I have seen tires gain up to 2 inches of circumference when spun hard....

Scoot what group do you run with. I just want to make sure that if I do it this way I will pass tech at other ARMA tracks.

In fact we talked about that today. If I do it this way we'll put 1 3/4 between the fender and tire.

We hacked up the Husky fender to get the look we wanted . Now that we have some patterns we'll be able to cut up the good fenders pretty easily. It looks like we'll be doing another one of these for my friends son.

holy cow I linked to here to see about ackerman. And saw your u joint in the steering. I just went monday and bought 1/2" drive socket to do my steering, that is funny that we had the same idea round the same time. glad I not the only one trying it. Looking good so far on the rest your build also.

Side view of the craftsman.   Fitting the fenders to make it look like they belong there is proving more difficult than I thought. I dislike working with sheet metal  :bash:. It seems my patience runs a little thin when I hit this stage.

I ordered my sprockets and carriers from EC the other day. Fedex says they'll be here tomorrow  :D.  If I can find the time this weekend I should have the tranny in and the caliper and rotor installed.
A Friend of mine has an MTD chassis very similar to this one.  You should be very happy with it.

It's definitely light.  My craftsman seems like a tank compared to the mtd.

We now have added another young man to our team and I got elected to help him with his mower. He will be running in JP. It's an older craftsman and I'll post some pics as we go along.

Thanks for looking

Prepping the 700. I removed 1,4, and 5 and installed a neutral ring and gear eliminator spacers from a 930.
I went to two local auto parts stores to get the seal for the pinion and ended up going home empty. Local NAPA wanted $13.50 plush$ 6.50 for shipping. Going to the bearing supply tomorrow. Funny thing is I put an order in at EC the other day and I forgot to order the seal. :bash:

Dang man...I only pay like 6 bucks for the oil seal at Napa..no shipping to be paid either. Make sure you are telling them to get you the Federal Mogul brand...

On another note, I see the latest JP you started has a 10 inch rotor..I applaud you boys on that one. Most think the little rotor is great but personally I think otherwise. They may be OK for a SS/JP but Im glad to see you upgraded.

Actually the 10" rotor is in the mod-x-r. and the brake hat in this thread http://www.heymow.com/index.php?topic=18162.0 is going on the new JP.. The red jp is going to use the stock brake. Not my idea and at this point out of my control.

I did give them the FM part # and that's what he came up with for a price.  :omg:

Here's the start of the exhaust for my mod-x-r. It took a lots less time than I thought and came out better to boot.

I haven't got much done. Been sick with a cold and work has been getting in the way. I got some more goody's from EC last week and finally had time the past couple of days to work on the mower. I'm trying to get the clutch done but it's proving a little more difficult than I thought it would but I've got a plan and just need to implement it.

Too many shaRP BENDS WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER FOR FLOW going down under the chassis and back and out instead of down looping back up and over then down again then back and out.

Thanks George I did consider that but I'm not sure what the track conditions are going to be (there reworking the track) and wanted to keep things high and tight. This is only a stock Indian for now. Once I add a flywheel, rod and some head work I'll need to do a referent route for the exhaust in order to reap the benefits of those parts.

Got the clutch done tonight. just need to put some guides on it. Then I need to put the rod through the frame. I decided I'm going to run a left side clutch and a right side brake.

Thanks Jon. I up loaded the wrong pic.  I put the right one up. Pic has guides now. I have an idler just ran out of time tonight. I'm helping my friends two teenage boy with there tractors. While he builds the snack shack for the track.

On the idler I only have room for it between the steering shaft and the engine pulley hopefully that will be ok

So I'm coming toward the end of this build and now have made a punch list. I worked all day and the punch list seems more like a revolving list than a count down. I have five nights to do eight nights worth of work.

It's funny how pictures exaggerate everything.  The toe is out. but not as much as the picture makes it look.  It was only out about 3/8.

3/8" is huge (not counting the picture) 0" to 1/8" is all that's needed
Title: Re: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: trbinrat on May 27, 2011, 12:12:40 am
no no no  It didn't hit the track like that. The picture was taken before the a front end was set up for initial weighing. The toe was set to 1/8..

I took it to the track tonight and did some testing. It ran pretty good. Still needs some work but not bad. This was my first time on a prepared chassis. It was definitely fun. I learned how to set it in the corner (what a difference that makes) and found out that I need a bigger steering wheel. after about 75 laps my arms are a little tired.

I also want to give a big thank you to all the people on here for providing all the information so I could get through my first build.

Title: Re: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: trbinrat on May 27, 2011, 08:45:48 am
Ya 75 laps.  Not all of it was at speed. Some of it was at idle in high gear finding and following my line. Then try to memorize my marks then I would hit the throttle and do ten laps. Then do it again. By the end I knocked 1.2 sec of my lap time.

The great thing was I had the track to myself.

Still lots to learn and lots to tweak.

For now it will get a 28 briggs. I had most of the parts from a 28 flathead I was going to build. just need to get a cam and spring retainers. We have a local race at the end of August. I need to have it done for that.

I have an extra Tecumseh that might go into it next year. But not sure yet all depends on funds.

I think this is going to be the next mower.  Probably be a SP, a short one at that at 39". I think this ones going to be a tough one, tranny location will be the hardest part I think. I have some what of a plan but open to ideas.

if you are going to use a 700 I would either put it right between the dash and fenders or just behind the H pattern inside the fenders. Would really want to reinforce the frame.
Title: Re: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: trbinrat on October 28, 2012, 10:57:46 pm
no frame on this mower its a pan chassis. probably going to have to use 16 ga. 1x2

I'm thinking I might have to put the tranny behind the axle. not sure yet I need to get the front and rear axle in first.
Title: Re: trbinrat's parts and tractor pics
Post by: WEASLE on October 28, 2012, 11:17:58 pm
the 1x2 is what I was thinking but would the 700 fit right infront of the seat mount with the 2 rubber bumpers on it? or is there no "floor" to mount it to there? Also how would you mount the tranny behind the axle and still work?

I hope so. Been working on a plan for the last couple of days. It weighs a little more than what I wanted to start with but I have a couple of ideas to combat that.

The plan is sixes on all four corners. My single speed 700 and a 32cid  Kawi flathead. Paint will be the original color and decals. That's the plan we'll see what happens.

I love doing my own work so I built a flow bench to try some things out. Found the plans on the net and built it for about $120. I need to get some good vacuum motors but my shop vac and dust collector will suffice for now.

I put my flathead kawi on it tonight just to try it out and learn a lot right off the bat.
