Looks like you possibly still have the factory choke linkage in place, could it be choking the engine at wot and flooding it out?

When you say cuts out off the throttle, are you referring to it just dies after that point, or that it falls on it's face next time into the throttle?

Tecumseh Engines / 490 ohv rod

I know this is a speculative question, but what would the upper rpm limit be for an oem rod in a ohv 490? I suppose I should ask the same question for the piston as well.

Um, yeah it is....didn't find that out till I was chasing an issue of floating the valves at 49-5000. Had a horrid valve job.  When they decked the block, they got carried away on the top corner above the pushrods and have .020" protrusion on that corner but flush on the opposite corner. It was living with a stock gasket so far. I'm the third owner of the mower, the original "overhauled" it before he sold it. So I'm stuck with it for now. Have a 16Hp enduro that I'm leaning on right now(literally)  for next year.

What would a safe minimum distance be for piston to head clearance using a stock rod at 5500rpm or less? I'm hoping .012" will be fine. Planning on using an ec copper gasket and that's where I'll be if figuring .032" for the gasket.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 31ci carb options
« on: September 05, 2014, 12:10:13 am »
If the rules in our chapter state that you must use a "lawn mower carb" but can swap parts between mfgs, what carb would be the best option? Only legal mods to carb are adding adjustable jet and removing the choke plate and shaft.
Should add for stock cam and less than 5500 rpm.
