Briggs Flathead / Briggs 8hp Vertical vs. Horizontal Crankshaft
« on: March 26, 2016, 05:19:00 pm »
Aside from any differences in the PTO end of the crank, are the vertical and horizontal crankshafts interchangeable?

Trying to find a Model 19 flat head crank without the synchro balancer, seems that crankshafts out of horizontal engines are much more plentiful than vertical.

Because of our rules, I must use Briggs parts, so I can't just put on the ARC Brass weights.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Stuck ARC Flywheel
« on: March 11, 2016, 01:34:44 pm »
I've been doing this for a lot of years.... Never have I had a flywheel stuck this hard.

Last night I fought with it for hours, finally stripped out the harmonic balancer puller I was using.

Think I've tried everything, impact on the puller, hit the puller with a big hammer, and even though you're not supposed to, heated it up with a torch. Still won't pop off. Key isn't sheared or anything like that. Usually I just tighten the puller and maybe one tap with the hammer and it pops off.

What did I do wrong? This is a flywheel I've had for several years and this time was only on for two or three races last year, then sat in my basement all winter. Put it on the same as I always do: line up the key, torque the nut with a little cordless impact I have that has a max of 100 ft lbs.

On a Vanguard twin if that matters.

Driveline / Peerless Part Numbers
« on: March 11, 2015, 08:20:26 pm »
I need some help from the Peerless experts out there!

I bought a right angle gearbox, made by an individual, which contains peerless gears. What I'm trying to do is figure out exactly what gears are inside of it and to be able to buy replacement and spare parts. I've done some research, and I believe what I have is as follows:

Input shaft from an 820 transaxle, 3/4" shaft PN-776274
Bevel gear from a 700 Transmission, 14 Tooth, PN-778113A - Got this part number from the person I bought the gearbox from.
Bevel gear from an MST-200 transaxle, 30 Tooth, PN-778334 - This guess is based upon the 5986-P1 stamped on the gear.

Now my questions:
1. From my research, I can replace the input bevel 778113A with 778153 to get a true steel gear, and not the pressed style. Is this correct?
2. Is there a steel replacement available for the output bevel 778334?
3. Are my part numbers accurate for the description of each that I have given?
4. What is a good, online source for the various Peerless parts I need?

I realize that I should be able to get these numbers from the person I bought the gearbox from, but so far my experience with that hasn't been the greatest. I certainly don't want something to break during the racing season and have to get replacement parts from them. I also like to carry spare parts with me whenever I go racing.

Got my second win of the season, mower count was a down because of the Sturgis Bike Rally, but a win none the less.

GoPro Hero 3 Camera, amazing how well these cameras work. YouTube really messes up the clarity of the video though.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Roller Tip Rockers
« on: June 17, 2012, 01:34:30 pm »
Will the roller tip rockers from Performance V Twins or EC fit under stock 38 cu. in. Vanguard valve covers with a Precision 355 cam, or are spacers needed?

I think it turned out great!

Driveline / New Driveline Questions
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:12:05 pm »
First of all, let me explain my situation. I've been running a centrifugal clutch for several years now and have decided to change over to a belt drive. I run a fairly strong 38 cu. in. vertical Vanguard v-twin with the belt clutch directly to a right angle gearbox. I am fortunate to be able to use a fairly short belt, only 59", and plan on using a 5/8" belt.

My questions are:

First, will a pully ever move up towards engine or gearbox shaft, if the set screws come loose? Am wondering if I should make spacers for both shafts above the pullies. I would rather not do this as I think I run the risk of the spacer wearing into the oil seals.

Second, what kind of belts does everyone run? Red, blue, green, tan, seems to be so many choices. I did a search and it seems that the red (rotary?)seem popular. If these are the best, what is a way to find a local distributor for them? Or, is any belt with the kevlar cords going to work out just fine?

Thanks in advance for your help, it's been many years since I've ran a belt clutch and my mower is a lot different now than it was then.

Post your Pics! / Crazy Racers Outlaw Reassembly
« on: April 05, 2010, 01:44:14 pm »
I repainted my mower this year, and since I enjoy looking at everyone else's build pictures, thought I would share mine. Our chassis rules are a bit more lax than most every other club as we can build our own from scratch. But anyhow, here are some pictures of what I got done last night, hope you all enjoy.

Bare Frame.

Axles and steering assembled, wheels and tires installed.

One of our drivers took some video from this weekend's races. Unfortunately, the audio on his camera wasn't working so you have to listen to music.

This is our fastest class, all of the mowers run v-twins. The track was pretty rough, but the videos turned out pretty well.

Tires / 2 ply vs. 4 ply
« on: December 27, 2008, 02:38:01 pm »
I have got my mower handling pretty good, however, in order to do so I have to pump my right rear tire up to around 12 psi. In doing this, the 2 ply tire I am using "bows" up and I lose quite a little contact area of the tire.

Nearly all of last year, I was running a single flathead, and the tire bowing up didn't bother, but now I am going to run a Vanguard twin. With the extra power that this motor makes, I am sure that I will want the biggest contact patch that I can get.

Can I put a 4 ply tire on the right rear and run the same air pressure that I have been and not have the tire bow up? Or, can I run lower air pressure and rely on the extra stiffness of the 4 ply to carry me through the corner?

I don't want to change the handling of the mower, just want the tire to have a flat face.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Oil Pan Gasket
« on: November 04, 2008, 07:00:06 pm »
I don't know excatly what is going on, but it seems as though my oil pan gasket is getting sucked into the motor, and is the second gasket that has done the identical thing. One of the gaskets started to leak on the filter side, and the other gasket started to leak on the starter side. Both times, the pan bolts were torqued to 150 in. lbs. and locktite was used on the bolts. I used gasket adhesive on the gasket and both surfaces were clean. The motor probably has less than 45 min. of run time total. Anyone else ever have this problem? This is on a 35 cu. in. Vanguard motor.

I plan on using a new breather when I put the motor back together, as that is the only thing that I can think if that would cause this problem.

Should a guy machine the pan or crank for clearance and just use silicone on the pan?

I also plan on putting different style rings in the motor this winter, but when I built the motor I put new, stock rings in. Even so, bad rings would cause more blowby, and blow the gasket out, not suck it in. At least that's what I would think.

Here is the breather I'm using:

Here is what's happening to the gasket, there are parts of the gasket that are blown out of the motor, but I think the bigger problem is the parts that are sucked in:
