Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Ring set
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:36:34 am »
One set is .020 over the standard bore size the other is the standard ring set that was supplied with the motor. Because of the condition of the bore and the cylinder walls after measuring i needed to go with the ring set that was .020 over as i wanted to make sure that i had a super tight fit..

I was just wondering if you used briggs and stratton rings, or some kind of aftermarket.  If you did use briggs rings, do you know what the difference is in the date code breakdown?   there is quite a difference in price for the ring sets, so I am assuming there is some kind of difference in the rings.  BTW, is this the "Ricky Bobby" from potterville?  Later,

What rings are you using?  I was looking at briggs rings and there is two different ones based on date code, not sure if one is better than the other??  The piston doesnt have any date code breakdown, so apparently either ring set should work?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: valve float?
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:39:12 pm »
My 28 flatty does the same thing if I run it too high (above 45-4600).  It doesnt pop or backfire or miss like the valves are floating, it just cuts out (like you shut it off) and cuts back in smooth.  Main jet adjustment doesnt seem to make much difference.  I always figured the stock cam just isn't designed to support that kind of rpm, and just cant keep up.  Just my two cents.....

Hey all the 2011 Vtwin shootout was a great success!  There was a lot of very fast, very clean racing going on.  Even though the weather was being difficult, the track turned out great thanks to Dave and the crew at Vestaburg Kart Speedway.  Now a few people in North America have some real bragging rights for at least a year  ;)  Thanks to everyone who make the drive to come race with us, hopefully we can make this an anual event!!  :D

Hey guys, the meeting with Dave at the Vestaburg Kart Speedway went well today, we figured out the last details, and made a few changes...

The V-twin shootout will now be a 2 day event (saturday/sunday) due to some local noise restrictions.  There will still be free rustic camping friday & saturday night for those of you planning to arrive on friday.

There will now be a better deal on the pit passes, was $10 each day, now $15 for 2 days.

A change has been make in the rules requiring all drivers of V-twin machines to be 18 years or older.

Any questions contact Ferris (Bounyhunter) or check the Vtwin shootout website at www.vtwinshootout.com

Briggs Flathead / Un-Identified piston and rod
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:04:27 pm »
Hey all,

Just pulled apart a 28ci flatty and found a different (not-briggs) looking connecting rod and different piston.  The rod has a much smoother texture and sharper edges than a briggs rod and has a part number cast on it that says K-1011.(and a logo that has arrrows pointing oposite directions)   The piston is not stock briggs either, it is stock size, but marked YCP.  Anyone know what these parts are?  Performance? Cheap Aftermarket?

Thanks for the info everyone, after reading these and talking to an engine builder I know, it looks like the chrome rings are primarily used for alum bore, and may not seal well for the iron bore.  Looks like I'll be using standard rings for this.  later,

I have always been told don't use the chrome rings with a cast iron bore block (unless you want to run the skeeters off while its running)

So your saying it may be more likely to not break the rings in, and smoke more with chrome rings on an Iron bore?  has anyone else also had this problem?

Gotta agree, siezed parts dont make much HP!   Like Al said, in this class we cant use performance parts or mix and match from different briggs engines.  Any part I use has to be stock for a 28ci flat head.  That being said, if later 28's came with better rings than earlier 28's, there is no reason I cant use them.  As long as they were stock for a 28 flatty.  So if one stock 28 piston or rings are better than others, thats what I am looking for.  Would there be a performance/sealing/compression advantage to using the chrome rings vs standard?  I see Chrome rings listed in the parts manual for the motor, so they should be legal.

yeah, I'm not planing to bore, the bore is in good shape, I'm just planning to do a valve job and re-ring.  Just wanted to find the best option for rings.  BTW, does anybody know what the valve seat angles are?  Are they 30 & 45?

I can bore up to .030 over and still be considered stock specs.  The bore I have is in good shape, I just plan on honing it and installing a stock bore piston and rings.  I just noticed there are many different rings, all of the 28ci flatheads I have show different part numbers for rings, and I've heard talk of reg rings, chrome rings, 1 piece oil rings, 3 piece oil rings, ect.  I just need to know what the desireable (better) rings are, and if they will work with any of the 28 pistons, or if there is a better stock 28ci piston that others ect..

Briggs Flathead / 28ci best stock parts
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:29:36 pm »
I am planning to rebuild my 28ci flatty before our season starts.  Quick hone, rings, and a valve job.  I am running stock class and can not have any mods or non 28 parts.  I see there are many different part #'s for pistons and rings by date code, and some rings are listed as chrome, some are not.  Will all the different stock bore rings fit the stock pistons?  and is there an "Ideal" piston and ring combo to use?   Are some stock pistons or rings better than others? Thanks,
