I know! But imaging to bore it out to fit a roller lifter! But I cant have a thick roller lifter! I think anywhere under .500 diameter will work I suppose but I'll double check how much room I have for the lifters in the block! Maybe a motorcycle roller lifters will work?

99% of bikes are overhead valve. If you want big hp from a gx390 you can get ahold of Mike Clements. He builds some over the top 390's. He also sells parts. He has told me of 50hp 390's. They are set on kill and dont las long. 35-40hp is a long living engine according to him. As far as the roller lifter. I wouldnt waste my time. There are other areas to look to get hp. Make it breathe and it will make hp.

I think you're going to come to find out that Mike is no longer in  business. I believe he sold out to Carlson racing engines.

Last I heard he had moved from NC to Florida. I did not think he was completely out of business. It kind of looks like he liqudated some of his old inventory.

An e-mail reply from Mike:

on,
No, we are not closing shop at all. I have just reached the point to where I would like to slow down a bit from the daily grind of machining engine components and working 12 to 16 hour days. Looks like a good friend of mine for many years is going to purchase my business and I will continue to help it on it's daily operations...... we intend to ramp up the business and come out with some new and better products. It is all going on right now. So, within a few weeks, we should have some good solid news as to the new direction we are taking this business. You can bet though, there will always be room for more and more race parts for many varieties of engines.
   thanks,
           Mike

Ok I have a idea! What if I just made a lifter that is a ballpoint style? Like a pen! It's small, multi deriectional, light weight, less friction and simple to make!

the lifter needs more contact on the cam to avoid wearing a groove or worse on the cam!

Yeah that's true! I winder if I get a chevy small block roller lifters and turn it down to a smaller diameter where it's enough that I can bore out the lifter bore.

If you have a pencil sized hole now, I HIGHLY doubt you will get an SBC roller lifter to fit. They are pretty large in comparison, not to mention they are long.

Well what do you recommend me to do?

If you really truly want roller lifters then I believ you are stuck custom making them. At that rate its a crap shoot if you dont totally understand whats going on and they may break causing even more money to be spent...But thats the nature of the beast, if you want one off custom stuff, thats the chance you take to pave your road to innovation. Personally if it were me, I would leave solid lifters in it and go...solids are good up to about 8000-8400 if you have the right valve springs and camshaft to make it all work. Least wise that is what I have saw and done in the SBC/BBC world...there is nothing wrong with running solid lifter setup. I think I would worry about my chassis and getting weight placement right as well as making it hook with minimal wheel "spin" before I worried about the minimal gain in roller rockers....As my dad always tells me, "somethings are worth the money right off the bat some arent. Its up to you to decide wether or not something is $400 faster."

With out having a broad head as the solid has you will rip the block apart as your pencil sized roller is pushed sideways because it will not follow the cam lobe properly. And solid lifters in these motors turn 10,000 rpm and have been for years with no ill effects. IF roller lifters were the ticket or feasible to a go fast gx390 I promise you someone would have done it already. They are not needed.

People don't use roller lifters to go fast, they use them to take advantage of the roller profile camshaft, that offsets the added weight of the lifter, why would you want a heavy lifter in there to slow you down? The idea is to make the valve train as light as possible not the other way around, you already have the perfect lifter. I'd be more concerned about making power with the camshaft unless your intention is to install a roller camshaft.

I understand about your concerns with valve train weight but this is for pulling application! :)

The application is irrelevent in this case.

RPM is RPM. Don't matter if its in a circle or straight line. I'm sure the tach couldn't tell ya the difference between the two.

These hondas aren't built like the briggs and some of the other motors. They have a forged crank and very stout stock parts.

True! I'm a honda fan myself so I'm trying to make it even better! I guess I gotta do some math work when I get home from vacation and I have a block that I can play with and many get a prototype lifters and try it out!
