Most rules say where the engine goes! And that usually is the stock location. There is not much room to move things around a lot, so it probably won't make a lot of difference.

Yes that is from here! The lawnmower racing is winding down. Not sure why, it's a low cost form of competitive motorsports. Plus it's fun! Facebook came along just to keep up with the times.
Here in Michigan we only have one track left, and that really is sad.

Briggs Flathead / Re: No spark from Alloy flywheel

The magnet might have to much clearance. I didn't know you can change magnets on a flywheel like that. That concerns me that the magnet could come apart. Be very careful with that.

Briggs Flathead / No spark from Alloy flywheel
« Last post by bimmerbaz on December 06, 2022, 03:51:27 pm »
Hiya,

I am currently building a 28ci flat head and wanted to put an allow flywheel on it. I got one from a friend that is not an ARC or commercially made  flywheel. I swapped the magnet from the original flywheel onto this alloy flywheel and now i have no spark from the original coil. So i put the original flywheel and magnet back on and i have spark again.  Any suggestions as to why when i swap the flywheel i loose spark?.

cheers

Hello from Superior,  Montana. I'm a long time wrench, general hobbiest, and growing machinist. Recently our local High School (about 100 kids) wanted to start a mechanic program. I got licensed to teach and wham bang here we are. I not only started a class but an after school club focused on lawn mower drag racing as well as American hot rod history. The race club kids are called the Grass Finks as an ode to classic hot rodding. We are pretty new and small so there is a lot of adjusting going on. I'm building a mower along with the kids. Currently the kids are still trying to figure out what part of building a rig interests them like engine power, body fab, tuning, etc. I, on the other hand, know where I'm headed just have limited experience with aspects of it. Jack of all trades matter of none situation.

My rig is a 73 Montgomery Ward best I can tell. I have swapped the engine out for a 42 Oppy vertical splasher. Currently the mower is the original transaxle but that will change. I plan to use this machine too increase my engine mod & machining, body work, and fabrication skills while showing the kids how to build creative and learn to problem solve. Anyways, glad to be a part of the forums. I'll have plenty questions and weird ideas but if I'm asking I promise I tried to scour the search bar for weeks prior.

1st Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Over the years I have sat in the rafters of this forum looking and learning from everyone. The amount of info in this forum is priceless and I believe everyone can agree. Losing this amount of knowledge and information would be sad to anyone that is wanting to get into this.

But, we must face the facts that forums like this are pretty much dead. Facebook has pretty much took over. So this brings me to ask this question.

Is there a way to archive this forum with all of its great information and start a FB group? I looked and there is a "HeyMow" group. Did someone from here start that?

I'm in northern Ga and wish there where tracks that raced mower classes. Dixie speedway and Rome speedway only races full size cars.  I know there is some in Alabama. My kids are now old enough to get involved in something like this. I feel FB is an easier platform to gain more interest and to help keep this alive. I maybe way off in left field here... I'm just a gear head that likes all types of racing that burns fuel.

Thoughts?

You got too many numbers.....
!0 degrees caster,  10 degrees camber.
10 pounds air in all the tires.
scale it with 25 pounds more on left front than the right front.
Then adjust your air from there.

Hi All,

So... my family has just finished up its first year of LMRA JPK.. We got hooked enough that we are now building 4 mowers for the next year. JPK, JPS, CP and FXS.

We are lucky enough to have a machine shop in the the family and are making it happen.  New to the sport last year we picked up many tips from the good people at our local track willing to share info in this sport.  We are wide open for suggestions and plan to be competitive in all classes.  One question that seems to be fairly well kept is what is a good starting point to set up steering geometry.  I have searched high and low and the best I can come up with is to experiment.. I know we will need to do this and we fully are planning to but without any input we're guessing. And we would like to not have to spend years getting this important little detail right.   Here's my best guess for a left hand turn only track up to 50-60 mph..

Right Caster 3-5 deg
Right Camber 7-9 Deg
Static Caster 2 Deg

Left front Caster 2-4 deg
Left Front Camber 1-2 Deg
Static Caster 2 Deg

Weight Transfer:   With all four tires on the ground place a 2x4 under the right wheel and turn the wheels 30 degrees to the left.      Adjust the preceding measurements till full front tire contact is made at the 30 degrees.

Curious if it is desirable to have the engine moved as far forward as possible???

If any of you would like to help us along and maybe give some advice we're all ear's.

We are building from scratch and plan to do as many performance parts as possible in-house.

Thanks in Advance!

Chassis / Re: Motorcycle brake disc on transaxle stub

Use the disks on the axle. The reason being, if the chain inside breaks, you will have no brakes.
25 seems a little high, as most parades are barely a walking speed. I would try for 10 - 15 MPH in your gearing.
You can still go around a float, and put on a show.
