Driveline / Removing the cover from a transaxle

   If you've ever tried to remove the cover from a transaxle, you know what a problem the RTV causes in preventing cover-from-case separation.  Try this: 

   If you're working on a Peerless Gear transaxle, the Service Manual Instructions tell you, after you've removed all the case bolts, to use the two screwdriver slots at either end of the back of the case seam to pry the top from the case.  Other manufacturers' instructions are similar.  I've never been able to get these to work, due to the grip strength of the RTV.  What I use is the Ma Bell knife shown in attached Photo 1 to begin the case-seam separation as shown in Photo 2.  This knife was used by phone-company linemen to open the lead-sheathed wire they used to use on the poles.  Since they don't use this wire anymore, my local phone-company lineman retiree gave me this knife, and it works great!  (Any similar sharp, wide-blade knife will do the same thing, but the Ma Bell knife also has the handy hammer-tap block.)  Tap it into the seam behind the differential gear until the top separates from the case. 

   CAUTION: Only tap it in enough to begin separating the cases -- do not tap it in too far or it will chip the differential-gear teeth. 

   After the case seam begins to open up -- it will usually 'pop' when it does -- and with the knife still holding the cases apart, take a straight-blade screwdriver and pry between the case halves on the right side.  Between the knife and the screwdriver, your cases should separate. 

   To complete the removal, you may need to use the screwdriver at the front of the case while holding the shift shaft down.  And if the axles start to come up when lifting the cover, tap them back down into the case.

   CAUTION: Use the knife and screwdriver carefully so as not to gouge the surfaces to which you will need to apply the RTV to re-seal the transaxle. 

   This works with transmissions, too, if you start on one corner.

Kohler Engines / Stock engine RPMs

   In the Driveline section, there is a post entitled "Getting speed out of Drive Shaft Mowers?" and one of the questions was about tweaking the governor to get more than 3600 RPM from the engine.  One of the Replies cautioned about going beyond 3800 RPM.  Allow me to share an incident from a factory service school:

   In February of 1999, I attended the Kohler Engine Level 2 Factory School in Kohler, Wisconsin, and on Thursday afternoon of the 5-day school, the class was given two Command 25hp V-twin engines to "do with whatever you'd like."  Since in our shops, we only see an engine needing repairs after it's been damaged, we decided we'd run one wide open and the other without oil.  For the wide-open engine, the instructor wired the governor open, set the engine stand outside (just in case), and started it up.  The tachometer read 5700 RPM -- for 45 minutes!  It never missed a beat, and would have run faster but the valve springs began floating, so 5700 was its maximum RPM-- well above the "recommended" governed 3600-3800 RPM.  Even with the factory muffler, the sound was impressive!

   Engine RPM limits are dependent on keeping with the design engineering of a maximum metal stress in a stock engine of 2,500 feet-per-minute (FPM) of travel, with allowable momentary speeds of 3,500 FPM.  An engine with a 3" stroke will travel 6" per revolution.  This engine turning 5000 RPM is at the 2,500 FPM industry-acceptable limit.  And with the precision manufacturing and materials of today's engines, these stresses are even more controlled.  An engine with a  2.75" (2-3/4") stroke can run over 5400 RPM to reach the 2500 FPM limit.  The stroke on the CH25 Kohler engines we maxed out is 2.64" which, at the 2500 FPM stress limit, is 5,681 RPM. 

   This applies not just to Kohler engines, but to all engines -- Tecumseh, Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki, Honda, etc.

Non-Affiliated Races / Mower racing in Butler, MO?

   Butler, MO, has a 3/8-mile oval dirt track that's been dormant for the last few years due to an ownership issue, but it's being refurbished for racing this season -- hopefully -- as Old 71 Speedway.  How would I be able to present mower racing to the new management?  Who would be good contact people for USLMRA, ARMA, or other organizations?  I'm still trying to find contact information for the track -- they have new signs out, but no contact numbers.

   I thought I'd seen this Posted somewhere on this site, but I couldn't find it, so I'm Posting it here.  A customer recently asked me how to figure the MPH of his mower in each gear, so to do this, you will need to know the following information: 
1. Transaxle or Transmission Input Shaft RPM -- This can be determined by dividing the transaxle/transmission pulley diameter by the engine pulley diameter; 
2. Drive-tire diameter; and
3. Gear ratios -- These can be found in other Driveline Posts for the 700 transmissions and the MST 200 and 820 transaxles.  For an unknown-model transmission/transaxle, you'll have to count the gear teeth.  Always divide the gear-tooth count of the gear on the shift-key shaft by the gear-tooth count on the countershaft (the shaft with the driven input bevel gear) to get the individual ratio.   
   For the overall gear ratio in any given gear, multiply the bevel-gear input ratio x the individual gear ratio x the final-drive ratio.  When using the 700 transmission, the final-drive ratio will be the number of teeth on the axle sprocket divided by the number of teeth on the transmission output-shaft sprocket. 

   When you have this information, use the Formula: 
Input RPM x Gear Reduction x Tire Circumference (Tire Diameter x 3.1416) x 0.000947 = MPH.

Peerless 820 Transaxle Models, Ratios, Gears and Axles

   If you are planning on using a Peerless 820 transaxle and are lucky enough to find a good used one that hasn't been opened up and/or had the ID tag removed, the following chart will tell you the shift-gear ratios of all 820 transaxles.  With one noted exception, these ratios were compiled from the Peerless 820 Illustrated Parts Lists (IPLs). 
   In the Input column, 'A'-Input refers to a transaxle mounted with the input pulley, shifter and brake Ahead of the axle ("Axle-Rearward").  'B'-Input refers to a transaxle mounted with the input pulley, shifter and brake mounted Behind the axle ("Axle-Forward").  Incorrectly mounting a transaxle will result in multiple Reverse speeds and one Forward speed.

Notes:
A.  Most 820s were 5- or 6-speed transaxles.  However, there are a couple of 2-speeds (820-009 & 820-039), two 3-speeds, so far (820-036 & 820-041) and two 4-speeds (820-032 & 820-034).
B.  Letter suffixes behind the transaxle Model and Spec Number will have the same ratios as the unlettered base model.  For example, an 820-016D has the same ratios as a plain 820-016.
C.  I tried to supply as many OEMs as possible.   The "OEM" listing shows for whom the transaxles were made.  Therefore, if someone tries to sell you "an original, good condition 6-speed 820-016 off a Murray rider," beware, since Murrays didn't come with the 820-016.
D.  The OEM designation also includes their "badge-engineered" models.  For example, Toro (820-024) can also include Lawn-Boy; Murray can include Scotts; Ferris = Simplicity; Garden Way = Troy-Bilt, etc.
E.  The 820-035 transaxle parts breakdown showed MST 200-Series gear ratios and part numbers for the gears.  I find no reason to doubt this, but until recently, I was not aware that the MST 200-Series gears would interchange with the 820 gears.  Since this is the case, then the 820 gears should work in the MST 200s and, by extension, the 700-Series transmissions. 
F.  The Snapper IPL shows different Forward ratios for the 820-017 than the Peerless IPL. I have two original NOS 820-017 transaxles that came from a Snapper distributor, and these have the Peerless ratios.  I haven't yet been able to learn why there is a discrepancy.
G.  The Reverse Ratio for the 820-034 is a "high-speed" Reverse, if you want to get out of trouble as fast as you got into it. 
** H.  Transaxles with ** after the Model-Spec Number are still available new.  The 820-003B transaxle is now obsolete from Peerless and remaining inventory is limited to what is on distributors' and dealers' shelves.
I.  The 820-017 mounts "upside-down."  The input shaft is on the bottom, but the shift shaft is still top-mounted. 
J.  Special axle-spider gears are available to lock the differential without damaging or welding the original gears.   


All Possible Peerless 820 Transaxle Gear-Speed Ratios

    All Peerless 820-Series transaxles have a non-changeable bevel-gear input ratio of 2.54:1 (13T:33T).  Final-drive ratios can be 8.02:1, 5.61:1, 3.44:1 or 2.31:1. 
    The 8.02:1 final-drive ratio is standard stock for all transaxles except the obsolete 820-017 which has a 2.31:1 final-drive ratio and a 1-piece live axle.  There are 5.61:1 and 3.44:1 final-drive gearsets available which can be used with the 820 transaxle for faster axle speeds without increasing the input-shaft speed.
    The ratios shown in this list are the selectable Forward gear ratios for the various cluster-gear speeds.  Ratios are listed from low to high gear.  Current gear-pair prices are also given.

NOTES: 
1. Axles are interchangeable left-to-right; they will work on either side, provided there is sufficient length to extend past the axle housing. 
2. (L) and (R) following the Part Number denotes their normal usage, Left or Right, with the transaxle positioned with the axles closest to the viewer.
3. "Exposed Length" is the amount of axle that is beyond the axle housing, where spacers and wheel hubs would mount. 
4. All axles listed have snap-ring or E-ring grooves at the ends to hold the wheel hubs on.  They can also be drilled-&-tapped for hub-retention bolts, if desired.

Shift-Key Update 

As of January 2023, the shift keys for the early 820s that have the small-diameter end on the shifter-brake shaft where the shift-key collar slides (1.00"), Shift Key P/Ns 792123A, 792131, 792138, and 799012, are now obsolete from the Peerless Gear factory.  The P/N 792180A Shift Keys for the late-model 820s with the large-diameter collar-slide end (1.125" / 1-1/8") will be the only 820 keys available. 

There are some 792123A and 799012 Shift Keys still in stock at some Tecumseh/Peerless Gear dealers, me included.  (The 799012 replaced the 792123A, 792131 and 792138.)  After these are gone, if you need 820 shift keys for a small-diameter-end shifter-brake shaft, you will have to replace the shifter-brake shaft with a late-model large-diameter shaft (776385 or 776386, depending on brake side) and corresponding 784352 collar and 792180A keys. 


Lubricant Update 

I contacted Peerless Gear a while back to ask about their former-Bentonite Grease that no longer has the word "Bentonite" on the grease bottle, and I received the following reply: 
"Bentonite Grease is almost non-existent today.  We have changed over to a Renolit LSTO EP Grease (synthetic).  You can use essentially any grease that has an NLGI Grade of 0." 
This is neither an "oil" nor the old Bentonite Grease as such, but it is more fluid than the old Bentonite.  I don't recommend using gear oil, no matter how thick, since the 820 shaft seals are O-rings, not lip-style seals, and will leak as the oil warms up.  The P/N 788067D Peerless Grease can be gotten from any Tecumseh/Lauson/Peerless Service Center, or if you have access to the other recommended grease, you can use it.

   The information in this post is applicable to all Peerless aluminum-case manual-shift gear-drive transaxles that have 3/4"-diameter axles and Model Numbers that start with MST-20x, such as MST 206-545C, a popular Sears/Craftsman/Husqvarna/Poulan 6-speed transaxle.

Standard-duty vs. Heavy-duty

   If you are wondering how to tell a "heavy-duty" MST 205 or 206 Peerless transaxle from a "standard-duty" one, the following should help:
 
   The "duty" differences are determined by whether a letter, if any, follows the 202, 204, 205 or 206 Spec Number.  The Spec Number is the 3-digit number following the 20x-.  For example, if it's a plain MST 205-510, with no letter suffix following the "510," then it is not as heavy-duty a transaxle as, say, an MST 205-510D.  (The 3rd digit of the 20x number tells how many speeds the transaxle originally is -- a 204 is a 4-speed, a 205 is a 5-speed, etc.)  "Duty" differences are: 
   A. The suffix-free MSTs originally had 5/8"-diameter output shafts for the gears between the brake shaft and the differential.  The MSTs with letter suffixes were improved with 3/4"-diameter output shafts and larger shaft-end bushings. 
   B. The suffixed models also had improved final-drive gears. 
   C. The really heavy-duty MSTs also have case-hardened cut-steel 16-tooth differential spider gears, whereas the standard spider gears are 13-tooth powdered metal. (Some of the non-suffix MSTs do have the 16-tooth spiders.) 
   D. Some MSTs also have hardened-steel cluster gears instead of the standard powdered metal gears.
 

   'A'-Input transaxles are mounted with the input pulley, shifter and brake Ahead of the axle ("Axle-Rearward"), while 'B'-Input transaxles mount with the input pulley, shifter and brake Behind the axle ("Axle-Forward").  Mounting them incorrectly will give you multiple Reverse speeds and only one Forward speed. 

   AXLE BEARINGS:  Most standard MST transaxles have the axles riding in the aluminum-alloy case material, which is dimensioned to act as a "bushing."  The aluminum-alloy case material has a small amount of silicon in it which aids in its bushing capability.  However, for heavy-duty service, you can also add needle bearings or ball bearings inside the case recesses to better support the axles and provide for increased durability and longevity, as well as reduced friction.  These bearings are available from Peerless - P/N 786218 for the Needle Bearing/Sleeve Assembly and 780119 for the Ball Bearing.  I would recommend the needle bearings, as they provide more bearing-area support for the axle. 

   So...if you are looking for an MST 205 or 206 for racing, you would probably want to avoid the ones without the Spec Number suffix letters, find out what ratios and gears are in it, and, ideally, add the axle bearings.   
 

Gear Ratios

   The following list gives all possible gear ratios available on the MST-Series transaxles.  The first column will be the Number of Teeth on the cluster gear pairs; the second column will be the actual Ratios themselves; and the third column shows the Part Numbers for the respective Forward gears.  The first number in the Number of Teeth column will be the number of teeth on the "drive" gear on the countershaft, the shaft with the large bevel gear on it -- and the second number in that column will be the number of teeth of the "driven" gear on the shift-key/brake shaft.

Input Pinion Bevel Gear Ratio - 2.31:1 (13T:30T - 778309p:778334p)
Final Drive Ratio - 9.89:1
   [Output Ratio - 3.45:1 (11T:38T - 778330s:778331p) x  Differential-Gear Ratio -  2.87:1  (15T:43T - 778332s, 778365s or 778369s:778327p or 778370p)]
These "fixed" ratios for all shift speeds compute to 22.87:1.  To determine the "overall" ratio in any gear, simply multiply your Cluster Ratio x 22.87 and this will give you the overall ratio for whatever speed you are in.

  NOTE: The 10-tooth drive gear for the lowest ratio is made onto the countershaft; this heat-treated gear is not available separately.  All other gears are individual gears.

NOTES:
1.  With the exception of the "granny-low" 1st gear ratio of 4.00:1, the number of teeth on both the driver and driven gear always totals 40 for these MST 200 transaxles.
2.  Powdered Metal gears will be noted by a 'p' suffix following the gear part number; Heat-treated Steel gears will have an 's' suffix.  The suffixes ARE NOT part of the Part Number.
* 3. Three different 15T Differential Drive Gears are used, depending on transaxle model - 778332, 778365 or 778369.  All three 15T gears are Steel.
z 4.  The 10T Countershaft gear for the 4.00:1 "granny-low" ratio is steel and is made as part of the countershaft.  The 'A'-Input Countershaft w/Gear is P/N 776400; the 'B'-Input Countershaft w/Gear is P/N 776404.
5.  The Reverse-drive spur gear includes (is made a part of) the Reverse-drive bevel gear, with the bevel gear having the same 30T as the Forward-drive bevel gear.

NOTE: 
1. These axles are the ones with 3/16" straight keyways and snap-ring grooves that hold the wheels on.  There are a few other axles that have pinned or threaded ends; they are not included in this list.
2. Axles are interchangeable left-to-right, provided they extend far enough past the housing to be useful. 
  a. The transaxle housing covers 7-1/4" of the left axle and 11-3/4" of the right axle. 
  b. Using the first (shortest) axle in each column as an example, the 775042 left axle will have 2-7/32" of axle exposed; the 775041 right axle will have 2-19/64" exposed. 
  c. Likewise, using the last (longest) axles, the 774738 left axle will have 9-3/16" exposed; the 775101 right axle will have 6-5/8" exposed.
  d.  "Left" and "Right" are like an 'A'-Input transaxle would mount in the tractor, with the axles behind the pulley, shifter and brake.   
3.  Special axle-spider gears are available that will lock the differential without damaging or welding the original spider gears.  Check my internet store.

Input Gears

Input Ratio is 3.00:1 for all 700 transmissions (14T:42T). 
The 14T Steel Input Gear is P/N 778176 and the 42T Steel Driven Gear is P/N 778154.  Note that this Input Gear is the one that requires the 3-piece needle-style thrust bearing.
The 14T Powdered Metal Input Gear is P/N 778113A and the 42T Powdered Metal Driven Gear is P/N 778137A.  Note that this Input Gear is the one that only uses one thrust washer.
