Briggs Flathead / Re: Opposed Twin Mods.

i have to disagree with that....ive turned the heck out of em.....only one that blew was one that got gas in the oil..burnt it up
Did you ever figure out why or how the gas was getting into the oil on the one you blew? Was it bad rings? Bad valves guides?  Do you think you could have saved that motor if you found the gas in the oil early? Thanks.

Man, you had to crack it open to remove the govenor, and if you just disconnected the govonor on the outside you better pray that motor holds together....  You must not be running with any built OHV's because when it comes to racing they tend to hand you your rear end on a platter if you are running a stock opposed, at least in my club they do!!!!!  Its your motor, and you are payind for it, so you do what you want.  I am just trying to save you some money in the long run, thats all!  I am not trying to be pushy or anything, I am honestly just trying to save you from the same costly mistakes I have made.

No i understand and thanks for the warning. My track just started and there are only 3 mowers in CP right now. It is going to grow and we will get faster mowers but we just want to get mowers out there and get people racing this season and get the crowd into it. Next year will be all out. And yes i just removed the outside govener parts and did not tear it apart. Like i said we are just trying to get mowers out there right now. If it blows then i have a 12.5 ohv i can throw in for the rest of this year.

I am hoping to make it threw this year without breaking the motor open as it has never set and was turned directly from mower to racer and it runs great. I do not rev it hard as there is no need on the track i run. I came in first in CP by half a lap so i can take it easy. Then when the rebuild starts it will be a full on build. But i do appreshiate the warning and help.

Very nice exhaust setups. How important is equal length pipes for these opposed? I assume it helps a little with scaviging.

What shops are you guys using for cams, cranks, pistons and the like for your opposed? I can't seem to find any shops that list parts for them. Everything is vtwin or OHV. Thanks in advance.

Post your Pics! / First race weekend with my Craftsman
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:10:50 am »
Just got done with my first race weekend on the new mower. I didn't get a lot of build pics, but it is nothing special at this point and most of it is stock. Other than the gearing and steering.

As you can see it is a very dusty track up here in Oregon and it is just starting out so we only had like 8 mowers, but more people and starting to catch on to it. Just thought you guys might like to see.

George thanks for all the time and effort you put into this build thread! You are a class act and people are hard pressed to find this much info on any topic on the net. Thanks again. I now have mowtivation for my build.

Great thread and forum!! Thanks all you guys for this info. I am putting together a CP craftsman and knew nothing about the motor before coming on this forum. Now i have the g-team opposed vid on the way and a much better understanding of the motor. Can't wait to start messing with the internals.
