Title: front brake question????
Post by: neremusnav on February 01, 2013, 06:41:25 am
What classes run front brakes?  I'm getting parts around for BP or CP or whatever and I am wondering who and what machines are running front brakes.  Are they necessary to be competitive on a local level?  Any input would be helpful.  Thanks.

There are a lot of guys that don't run them but the ones that do run them seem to love them for the most part.

ALSO YOU CAN DRIVE INTO THE TURN DEEPER WITH FRONT BRAKES.

I would say most likely not necessary for a local level.

Yes, There is a comfort zone using front brakes and benifits.(depending on what class these will be used in) My wife has expressed that she wants me to put them on her MODXR/GP this year. Not a band idea. She had them on her Superstock-IMOW, allthough probably not needed for that class, she felt more secure. Cha-Ching, guess I better sell something!.

I have them on my BP/SS and cannot live without them.

The MCP front brakes use a large disc and will stop you dead in your tracks, but they are high maint.
EC Sells some smaller front brakes that fit into the wheel and are space saving - very, very nice too.

alright so what I am getting is if you have the money...get em... if not youn will probably still be ok?  I am not trying to cheap out but I am trying to get started in mower racing cheaply and build on it.  I still would not mind info on front brake kits / spindles or what anybody is using.  Thanks for everybodies input so far.

That is pretty much correct. I agree more with Flipper but yes if you are getting started there is other things to worry about first. Once you run front brakes on a fast mower you won't want to run without them again.
If your spindles have 5/8 axles you'll have several options for front brakes. I run Hegar front brakes and love them. If you want information on those when you decide to get some send me a message!

I had them on my Mini, did not like them and took them off, actually slowed me down. Minis are very light, the heaver class definiately need them.

I use a quick change left front only. Easily interchanges between machines. Works great.

Does running a left front brake pull to one side or try to spin out or does the rear balance that out?

...For what it is worth, I use a diagonal brake pattern by having an adjustable hydraulic brake bias to give the chassis a short "twitch" to the left before the right front applies, which becomes a great drift into the corners under the right throttle...

Is the left "twitch" before the right grabs what you mean by diagonal?

 Yes.  They pull to the left before equalizing straight.  The Left Front and Rear Brake Applies at the same rate, with a delay in the right front brake...I know, it's weird, but works good.  It's probably because it compensates for a defective chassis build, LOL!!

Defective chassis? You? No.  Good to know cause I may be building a defective chassis as we speak. Lol

...And don't forget 1 bald tire, and two flat tires.  Oh, and you HAVE to have an oil leak!!   :woo:

That sounds like a pretty sweet idea.  The diagonal split reminds me of FWD cars from the 80 and 90s.  Are you running two masters then?  I am curious as to how you have that hooked up.

Single master cylinder.  Probably should have done a dual, but it was what I had at the time.  But, it works!

So it sounds like you are using both outlets to feed the front and back brakes at the same time, one channel is for front left/rear caliper half.  The other channel is front right/other rear caliper half. And you bias it with a valve to allow the front left/ real caliper half to go first?

So half of the rear caliper extends then other half follows once the other circuit chimes in?  I'm trying to figure out setup in my head here.   lol

Simple:  The RF is the only one with hydraulic proportioning.  Because this was my first build, I made tons of mistakes.  I needed an extra "trick" to get this too-tall, too-heavy mower to apex correctly with a too-fat driver.  The right brake apply and the right throttle sends me right around the corners.

You learn as you go!!
