Coffee Shop / Re: Thumb Racing or Clubs

Nothing planned. I was thinking of getting a group together to race at Arthur Raceway but it probably will not happen with half the group being farmers and harvest in full swing.

How about the stuff used to seal the crank case halfs together on two-stroke engines. It is made to resist gasoline.

What about 2 barrel carbs and intake manifold on Kohler 20 hp v-twins? They never came that way from the factory and looks nothing like the stock single barrel.

Coffee Shop / Hegar Front Brakes which Van-K Rims?
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:01:18 pm »
I got my first set of front brakes now I need to decide on rims. I was planing on running 7.5" wide wheels before I got the brakes but they have a 3" offset from Van-K. From what I have read 2.5" offset will work but possibly more if you have the right rim. So my question is will a Van-K 7.5" rim with 3" offset work with Hegar brakes or will I have to use their 7.25" rims at 2.5" backspace?

I am also wondering where do I find polished 8x8 Van-K rims?  I see them listed on there site but have not been able to find a place to purchase them.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Max Compression Ratio on 93 Octane?

That pump gas rule is pretty vague. I am sure if you looked hard enough any fuel you wanted could be found at a pump.  Why don't they just list what isn't legal to burn?
I don't want to drive 40min just for a few gallons of race gas that will get old by the time I use it all. I will have to measure the chamber size and see if I am anyware near 10 to 1.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Max Compression Ratio on 93 Octane?
« on: January 09, 2015, 12:11:00 pm »
I am building a 44 Intek with some used Ryker heads with an unknown amount of milling.  The previous owner of the heads ran 108 octane on a 40ci. He claimed it did not run right on premium gas. There was no mention of knocking or pre detonation but if it did knock it should have snapped his stock 40 rods like a twig.  I would like to run 93 octane because I am cheap and believe when the rules say pump gas they mean everyday regular premium not race gas.  So how much compression can I run on 93 and was the previous owners problems with it just a matter of tuning?

Tires / Tire Grooving?

Who has done any tire grooving or sipping to lawn mower tires.  How well did it work, which tire, and what kind of pattern did you cut?

Yes. I build and sell them. I its a kit for the peerless 700 they sell for $155.  There are a few members on here that are using them
Do you have any pictures of your kit? Is it anything like Rocket Ron's single speed peerless?

I race in the Thumb Mowers group. We have no more races planed for this year but January 3rd we plan on doing some ice racing at the Lucky Thumb track in Deford. Weather permitting of course.

Didn't think a fuel pump could pump enough volume to make a vacuum in the crank case. Do you use a standard stock pump or something else? Would you plumb the pump into the stock crank vent and close the valve cover hole?

I was also thinking about running a cable operated clutch on one of my builds. I plan on using a brake cable off a snowmobile.

Coffee Shop / Re: 3/4" internal bearings for front hubs?
« on: August 23, 2014, 12:21:35 am »
Thanks for the bearing ideas. What is the outer diameter of that EC bearing George? Maybe I am weird but it just seems there is a lot of flexing and bending in those standard 5/8" spindles. I have to adjust the camber a few times a year to keep things where I want them but if I ever get front brakes I imagine they would not work with a 3/4" spindle.
