Title: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on December 28, 2011, 07:10:15 pm
Well I thought I would share what I been up too in my free time...
started with Murray wide Body frame rails as my chaissis. Will run another Vertical Tecumseh Engine. This is gonna be a CHEAP build easy build, and again to show it can be done cheaply and yet be fast and win races.

The rear axle is in seat in and fenders inplace.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00445.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00445.jpg)

Using Jakes hood this is what its gonna look like
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00446.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00446.jpg)

rear view of it LOOK familiar, THATS right its the fenders off OLD RED the original set before I went to 6" wheels. SO inessence this is the 2nd rebirth OF OLD RED. And I will even let the old Bird Drive it.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00447.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00447.jpg)

Another angle of the rear view
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00448.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00448.jpg)

something different here, using scrap and drop offs I made the axle from 1x2 square tubing We will see how this works I may be redoing the mount for the Steering column as I do not like this one.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00449.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00449.jpg)

Here is the cross bars and the lagb sitting in there not bolted down as of yet
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00450.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00450.jpg)
nice tight and right against the bearing no flex here.
A rear view of axle and fender mount this is built to sit 2" off the ground.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00451.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00451.jpg)

here is the deck tacked to the frame, yes I love the look the deck halves give AND i am thinking of incorporating the grass chute into the exhaust as IU did on jakes Single.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00452.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00452.jpg)

This is the left sode with the deck half on.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00453.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00453.jpg)

Close up of where the rear sprocket is gonna be
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00454.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00454.jpg)

Here is the right side this is going to be the brake side. ONLY two cassettes here on the axle. The way I have it built frame is 15" wide there is no need for the third bearing. Already have a a couple chassis out there with this setup and it works well.,

so on all your build do you always offset both axle's to the right? also do you set both your plates that hold your heims on the front axle at 10-12 degree's or just the right side?

Post by: George Herrin on December 28, 2011, 09:27:37 pm
No just the Super mods are off set, and depending on how it drives and track conditions as to what we set the plates to.

How much offset are you allowed? Just seems like a lot in the pictures.
Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on December 29, 2011, 09:58:49 am
Center of frame to outside right tire is 23, center of frame to outside left tire is 19, some call it 2 inch offset, the difference in measurement is 4" its a total 42" wide.

Told ya I did not like the first column mount on the front, so I re did it here is the end result. It leaves the front more open to work on whatever is needed.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00459.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00459.jpg)

The steering column is in and done.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00458.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00458.jpg)

LAGB is in and bolted down and jack shaft is started first carrier bearing is mounted.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00457.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00457.jpg)

I will be adding an outside bearing to the shaft but have to go get another bearing as we were trying something we shattered the one we had.

What size tubing/rod do you use for your dash and steering supports?
Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on December 29, 2011, 07:23:04 pm
1/2 o.d. hollow tubing its maybe .125 thick not sure. Its some stuff a friend/customer brought over for a build I did last year he said I could keep the left over stuff. all the square tubing is 1".

Isn't it that if I build to US rules I would be legal for ARMA?

That used to be the case, but US Has had some rules changes since then and with his class I would definitely look at both rulebooks closely.

Looking at the US rules for FXS it says 39" minimum wheel base, what is the max?  The FXT is 42" minimum so I would like to build a FXS to 42" wheelbase so all I have to do is put a twin on later to make it a FXT... is this ok to do seeing it says no MAX wheelbase for FXS?
Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on December 30, 2011, 09:33:06 pm
Yes that is OK... I can tell you for handling you dont wanna get over 48. IF you notice though it says unaltered wheelbase.

Looks like if you build to US FXS or FXT you will be legal for MS or MT in ARMA.  Thats what it looks like to me at least

Below are a series of pictures of the rear drive line. Didn't do much the last couple days been tinkering on the truck and some other things Then today it was so nice me and Jake took the bike for a ride. Anyhow still have a lil to do have to add the chain tensioner and a lil more structural work. key to this setup is the shaft slides in and out by hand easily.

is that rod coming off the gear box a 1" or 3/4?

3/4" I ran for 2 years using a 3/4 on my last Super Mod twin never broke one or bent or twisted one. SO I went that route again. Plus I had it all just sitting there.

Curious, what mowers did you get your decks off of that you put on Jake's single and now this one?  They have the metal chute where a lot of the ones I have seen have a opening in the deck with the plastic chute that lays over it..

You widen out the axles and running boards... chassis stays intact.

You basically just have to use the stock frame rails, you can do whatever you want from there.

Or, you can press the control button along with the + button on your keyboard, it will enlarge the screen by 10% each time. To go back to you normal view, then hit control -.  Control n will also "copy" the page you are on, and it will be fully functional.

George going back a few pictures I was wondering what you used for your jackshaft? Is it a one piece that has a 3/4" hole and keyway in one end and 1 1/4" od if so were can I get one is it solid or is it hallow?
Any help here would be great
Thanks

RAGB has a 3/4 shaft coming out of it. I used the center out of a old rear wheel. I torched it out then cut the ugly off then it slides onto the ragb shaft. then I slide a 3/4 keyed shaft into it to extend it.

Looks awesome george! I was wondering the same as others on the 6 inch rears. I like my 8'sheads as it retains some mower like looks.
Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on February 05, 2012, 01:02:49 pm
YUP I have to agree 8's have a more mowish look. On this one I looked at ease of build what was less work. That would be 6's AND I had them versus buying new rims and tires for 8 setup. And they dont bounce as much as the 8's Plus there are more selections available for tires compared to just two for the 8's the hoosiers versus the american racer. Anyways its on hold till I fifnah a customers chassis.

sorry to post in a old tread, but with center of an old wheel used, did you weld it to the extension shaft or just slid it on with a key?

slid it on with a key. The key runs the length of the hub. Mower is now finish except paint. I will take lots of pictures when I strip for paint. Got the customers chassis done  and gone I had basically a week and half to finish this to run it tomorrow at our second race. We have 20 laps on it here at the house. Shes loaded in the trailer and ready to go. Like I said I will post pictures and videos to finish this thread. I did post some pictures of it on my face book page for those interested and cant wait.

Well the maiden voyage was a huge success. Right out of the box or off the build table this hot rod was a blast to drive comfortable, and FAST. Track was dry slick and was a handful to say the least practice went evry well and the heat was even better. With just a 2 lb air change the chassis was great motor with a 1/8 turn on the needles was spot on. starting 5th I won the heat.
Only thing done in pits was tighten bottom primary chain. Feature time on the pole not sure what the deal was with second place mower never come up beside me and I kept waiting and not paying attention to the flagger when Nick on his BIG kohler powered hotrod blew by I look at flagman and it was race on. Had no problem staying with the kohler till I dropped a cylinder. Broke and adjuster on one of the rocker arms.
I was very very pleased with the way it worked out of the box. New designs and changes I made in this chassis made a huge difference. I have video of the feature from the helmet cam and soon as I get it up loaded will get it up.

Mike last year it wasn't the biggest motor than won the race, quite the opposite actually, it was a mower that was consistent and handled well. Handling is far superior than engine in my opinion.

George, how do you like 6" rear wheels on the super mod twin

Oh, how do vannys do in the fxt class?

They hold their own.  They can be built to perform with the Kohlers.  A great chassis is key.  Before Ryan ran the Kohler he started with Vanguards, he still builds Vanguards also.  A Ronnie McClain built Vanguard won the US V twin shootout in Michigan the last two years I believe.

The vannys do very well in fxt with the right parts. At the finals Rich Webb was the second fastest behind me with one of my vanguards. It was just a 34ci back up engine. We are getting just under 80hp out of them.

George the big carbs look good, doesn't look like they are going to restrict too much. Kind of like a pair of toilets on a boeing 757 lol. I was wondering when you were going to give those a try.

That was a good one Ryan, And George you better hang on to you that thing you may have more motor now than you can hang on to. Those short intakes like that will really wake it up and add better throttle response. Should be some great racing!

Murray is a 3" tall frame I used 6x9 wheels and 12x9x6 tires. axle is laid on the framewith mounting hardwarepush the hardware up to frame get square tack in place. Remove axle and cut the frame where it sit. I have square tubing run the length of rame. So basically I cut/remove the top of the frame exposing the square tubing. This gives axle clearance and puts me at 2" ride height.

How exactly do you make the shaft coming out of the gearbox were your sprocket goes longer?
Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on January 04, 2013, 08:19:54 pm
Used a trans axle - axle cut down joined at gear box using a wheel hub we cut out of a wheel.

I understand how you did that and I was going to ask the same thing if you used the incert of a wheel. but did you weld one end of the insert to the 3/4 or what cause I cant see what keeps the shaft from comming off the RAGB. I know the insert is keyed on to the axle and the RAGB, also that the insert is bigger than the bearing on the support end, but other than just the keyway, what keeps the axle from sliding outward? I was just trying to make my self clearer but may have made it more confusing.........sorry

Title: Re: 2012 Super Modified Twin
Post by: George Herrin on January 19, 2013, 06:54:08 pm
Not on mine as its built. Sprocket on my left side doesnt GIVE ROOM. Put sprocket on right side and yes.
Before I went to the front brakes I had 11x5.5x6 tires on 8.25x6 rims. building a narrower front axle so I can go back to that wheel size.

Well I thought I would share what I been up too in my free time...
started with Murray wide Body frame rails as my chaissis. Will run another Vertical Tecumseh Engine. This is gonna be a CHEAP build easy build, and again to show it can be done cheaply and yet be fast and win races.

The rear axle is in seat in and fenders inplace.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00445.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00445.jpg)

Using Jakes hood this is what its gonna look like
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00446.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00446.jpg)

rear view of it LOOK familiar, THATS right its the fenders off OLD RED the original set before I went to 6" wheels. SO inessence this is the 2nd rebirth OF OLD RED. And I will even let the old Bird Drive it.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00447.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00447.jpg)

Another angle of the rear view
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00448.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00448.jpg)

something different here, using scrap and drop offs I made the axle from 1x2 square tubing We will see how this works I may be redoing the mount for the Steering column as I do not like this one.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00449.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00449.jpg)

Here is the cross bars and the lagb sitting in there not bolted down as of yet
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00450.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00450.jpg)
nice tight and right against the bearing no flex here.
A rear view of axle and fender mount this is built to sit 2" off the ground.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00451.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00451.jpg)

here is the deck tacked to the frame, yes I love the look the deck halves give AND i am thinking of incorporating the grass chute into the exhaust as IU did on jakes Single.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00452.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00452.jpg)

This is the left sode with the deck half on.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00453.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00453.jpg)

Close up of where the rear sprocket is gonna be
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00454.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00454.jpg)

Here is the right side this is going to be the brake side. ONLY two cassettes here on the axle. The way I have it built frame is 15" wide there is no need for the third bearing. Already have a a couple chassis out there with this setup and it works well.,
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_DVC00455.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view&current=DVC00455.jpg)
