Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Valve adjustment on 31c707 Briggs
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:07:31 am »
First off this a totally stock engine for cutting grass not a racer.
Going to adjust the valves. near as i can figure the spec. is
Intake .003-.005
Exhaust .005-.007
The thing that is getting me is the valve adjustment procedure.
It is stating to bring piston all the way to top dead center. Then back it off till the piston goes down a 1/4" then set the valve.
I would imagine the valve would still be partway open at this time.

I guess my question/s would be. Is this correct? and does this have something to do with the compression release?
Or three do i adjust the valves with them fully closed?

Keeping in mind this is a grass cutter not a racer.

Thanks for the help

Okay so i am trying to install the billet flywheel. I got a hub from ES the 6611AVS and using a 6611 flywheel. If i line up the keyway with the hub and align the magnet on the flywheel with the stock flywheel. the mark on the hub is about 90 degrees off on the markings of the flywheel. I had this same flywheel but with a different hub on the 31 ci motor and it was off as well. approx. 90 degrees off as well. Do not quote me on the 90 degree as i did not put a degree wheel on it.
Does anyone have a clue what hub to run?
I called up ARC and he did not know which one would work either. Seemed like he did not have a ton of information on the 33ci motor.
This is a brand new engine by the way just out of the box, so no the crank has not been swapped or anything.
Thanks for any help.

Well looks like this Saturday nights race will be on the governor. After Saturday night will be pulling the crank and sending it out. Kind of wish i stuck with a 31 cid without AVS.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 31 ci and 33 ci parts inter changeability

Sad sad day i blew the lower end out of my 31 ci briggs single ohv. I still have a good cylinder head out of this. This was a 18hp or 18.5hp. Anyways i am picking up a new 21hp briggs intek 33 ci. single engine.
My question is, will my 31ci cylinder head fit on this engine along with the 31ci ES copper cylinder head gasket. This engine will remain stock lower end. just a billet flywheel and the cylinder head. and of course a adjustable carb with a K&N air filter all off the 31ci engine.
They tell me this new engine will be a AVS engine. The plan is to run it off the governor but keep the gearing conservative. Read no huge rpm.

This new engine according to ES i will need to change the hub in my flywheel to a avs one otherwise the timing will be off
The engine will be coming with a electronic ignition, will this work with the flywheel or will i just use my stock coil?
Is there anything i should remove from the inside of the engine, such as the governor gear or anything like that? If I should does anyone have any pictures they could post.
Yes i realize i should have better internal parts but the other engine lasted for quite some time. Not a power house for sure, But it did run good.

Sorry for the long winded topic but any help will be appreciated
Thanks

Is the solenoid on the bottom of the carb working correctly?

How can you tell if the solenoid on the bottom of the carb working correctly?
