Briggs Flathead / 8hp briggs starter gear
« on: June 25, 2015, 11:51:35 pm »
I have a mildly built 8hp a cam billet flywheel dual valve springs and larger valves I dont know much about the parts because i just got a few boxes of engine parts and a few blocks. My question is when i go to start the engine if it backfires it just shreds the starter gear. Is it a starter shiming problem or is this a common problem because i was told that you arent able to get a high torque starter for these engines. Thanks

the throttle buterfly does move and accelerates when i twist it
i do have a return spring but it is hooked up to the throttle cable so it shouldnt interfere with the governer
im thinking that it could be the spring that connects the governer arm to the governer plate might be weak but im not sure

in theroy if he even had a 1:1 ratio on the pulleys and the gearbox is a 1:1 is should spin fast enough but the gearbo  have enough torque to keep the clutch engaged

i have a john deere 111 that i have bought that is half built. It has a 1" axle with the ends milled down to 3/4" for the rims. Im going to get rid of that and get aluminum rims and hubs. the only thing that im confused on is shoulf i get a 1" straight axle or a 1-1/4" axle.
