Garden Tractor Pulling / "County Fair" Pulling
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:36:15 pm »
With summer coming up shortly, and all the fun summer/fall events to follow I have a question about pulling...

It seems at the county fairs, they will let you go out and pull with anything that you bring, I have yet to find a rules sheet for any of the ones in my area.

I'm thinking about entering El Toro in just for fun, not really expecting it to do all that well - since it was built for off-roading and not pulling.

Before I even THINK about doing this, is there anything I should address first?

I currently have the thing almost completely torn down since I'm re-building it (so-to-speak).

For those of you that don't remember the build, you can find it over on the OffRoadMowers.com's ATLMA Forums here: http://www.atlma.us/index.php/topic,30.0.html

Briggs Flathead / Dual carbs on an opposed
« on: August 29, 2007, 05:31:33 pm »
I just found this setup, it probably doesn't give any performance increase, would be a pain to get them synch'd properly, but it sure looks cool!

Anyone done, or heard of doing this?

Driveline / Pulley/sprocket ratio "sweet spot"
« on: January 18, 2007, 05:20:23 pm »
Well, while I was calculating out my top speed using the file squidd gave me, I realized something... I realized that I don't care how fast it goes!!

What I was trying to actually do, was find the "sweet spot" and have it geared so when I'm in 5th gear, my engine still has enough power to push the mower without bogging down; but still has enough speed that It would be pointless to gear it any higher.

Not sure if that was a good explanation, but yeah...

So you all know pretty much know my setup by now.. Opposed twin 18 hooked up to a peerless 700 with an exact 1:1 ratio. The 700 has the stock (8 tooth?) output sprocket, and the tires are stock height for the front of most mowers. Now I want to get the smallest sprocket possible on my axle, as the current 42 tooth sprocket has eaten rocks, dirt, snow, logs, and all sorts of nasty things. I want to stop that! I was looking at something like a 15 or 20 tooth sprocket - but that would considerably raise my ground speed. I just don't want to overdrive it so much that it bogs down like the wizard did. I didn't mind shifting the wizard through the gears, but on the Toro the shifter is on the right side. I realize I could probably relocate it to the left side, but rather not (then my shifts would be backwards too).

So what's the smallest sprocket that I'd be able to put on there and not bog it down in 5th? I know that you guys know more about the torque curves and final drive ratios and all that great stuff than I do.

Other Interesting Builds / How To: Make Your Own Leakdown Tester
« on: January 06, 2007, 07:07:26 pm »
For Cheap! I wasn't about to go spend $75+ on a leakdown tester, I could have made it for cheaper but I got all the parts at my local hardware store because I was lazy and didn't want to drive 30+ minutes to a town that actually has stores open  Only spent $38 on it though, which isn't too bad.

You'll need the above goodies. The hose is a regular grease gun hose.

Step one, remove them from the packages!

After step 1 you should have this pile of fun stuff.

Very first real step, put some nice teflon tape on the threads.

Assemble the regulator like so.

Assemble the 1/8" to 1/4" adapter.

You should then have this.

Congradulations! You now have your very own leakdown tester!

Briggs Flathead / Opposed Twin Running Issues (1/14 Update)
« on: December 30, 2006, 05:02:27 pm »
:bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

I swear to god I'm about 5 seconds away from beating the #$%^& out of that Twin 19

:bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

I pulled the carb off the Wizard (poor thing is still getting stripped for parts) and put it on the Toro. It ran excellent for a little while. I cruised down into the back yard and headed back up - and then it started to sputter and wanted to die. I limped it up towards the garage where it died. Got it started back up again and couldn't give it any throttle of it would start to die. Put the choke on all the way and it would at least idle; so I idled it back to the garage. The whole entire carb and part of the intake grew ice during this whole process too (what the..?!!?!?).

There is absolutely NO reason why it should be doing this!!!! It's obviously not a dirty carb like I thought it might have been. It ran like this since the first time I started up the engine, so I know it's not the gas tank. The original carb wouldn't even let the mower run, the parts carb would let it run intermittently & the same outcome from the Wizard's. Now I can go outside and put the carb back on the Wizard and it'll start up and run great with no problems.

Now my first thought was the hose that provides the pulse to the fuel pump. I checked it and it was in good condition, no cracks, wasn't brittle - nothing. So I thought maybe it was loosing air from the ends, so I put a hose clamp on it, which did nothing. I can feel the engine pulse from the breather hose so I know it's there. All the fuel lines and fuel filter are new. WHAT on earth is the problem here?!?!?!

I'm seriously 5 minutes away from pulling that engine off, beating the crap out of it with a sledgehammer; and purring the 12.5 back on

Driveline / Where to buy: 3/4" keyed axle
« on: December 26, 2006, 08:00:11 pm »
I did a search and didn't come up with anything all too useful. Spent a few hours going to different kart and mower sites, and all I can find is 1" axles.

Now, I would just go and get a 1" keyed axle, since I need bearings, brakes & a sprocket to go on there - but my nice new flat black rims are for 3/4" keyed axle. Since I just spent $50 on those darn things, I really don't want to get new ones. Yeah, I can get a 1" axle, throw a hub on it and run the wheels that I got on my golfcart no problem - but then I still have these 3/4" rims that I bought for $50 that just gather dust.

:bash:

So where can I get a cheap keyed 3/4" live axle for zee toro? My pretzel axle is in need of replacement!

Post your Pics! / ahhhhahhahaha LOL! older pics!
« on: November 22, 2006, 09:44:41 pm »
I just found this while looking for pics of my golfcart for the longest thread:

That was my second tinker toy. It was the one that I mentioned a few weeks ago about running ti straight on rubbing alcohol and riding wheelies everywhere  :omg: My friend and I would drive it 2 miles (on the road) to the beach (and back at 2am) with a trailer full of DJ equipment every Saturday!

Some pics of the electric golfcart (1972 ez go):

It was my off-road machine before I got the gas model. It stopped being my off-road machine when I fell through the ice and well, lets just say 72 volts of deep cycle marine batteries, water, and me don't mix very well

The 1972 gas model:

Those are really the only pics I have of it, still looks pretty much the same. Seats falling off, ugly town painted orange, utility bed on the back, etc... Just now it has a lift and allot more scratches and dents in it.

Briggs Flathead / Thrust Washers
« on: November 12, 2006, 12:05:19 am »
used to corret the endplay... Does anyone on here know much about them?

I ask because I ordered one from B&S, and $15 later I lost the @#$^ thing between the hardware store, changing the oil in the toro, and going to install it and reassemble the engine. I searched for about an hour and it's GONE. I refuse to buy another washer for $15

Briggs Flathead / What in the....???
« on: November 04, 2006, 05:07:24 pm »
Allright, so I was cruizing around on the Toro today (actually a few minutes ago)... I was driving up this slight hill on the road when all the sudden I lost all power and the engine bogged down HARD. I gave it all the throttle she had and the engine just sputtered and gained some RPM and sputtered again. It was like I was out of gas, but I just filled the tank before I took off. I looked behind me at the engine to see this HUGE cloud of blueish-white smoke behind me. "OH NO!!!! I BLEW THE MOTOR!!!!" I thought... when just then the smoke stopped coming out of the exhaust and the RPM surged (nearly throwing me off the back - lol). I drove it home with no further incident... I'm not sure if for some reason some oil got past the crankcase vent and into the carb (I added about 1/4th qt of oil before I left) or what happened. It's not making any unusual knocking, pinging or clunking sounds. It's acting like nothing happened... What on earth!??!!!?!?!?
