Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanguard 101 for the confused noobie
« on: May 10, 2015, 07:18:20 pm »
Did some searchs on here and read alot of posts but still a little confused.

Question 1- if i take a vanny 35 and add 38 heads i gain bigger valves and ports but lose some compression. Correct?

Question 2- if i bore the 35 out to use an intek 40 piston ( standard 40 bore) and ARC rod and zero deck the block i will be back to an "acceptable" compression ratio with the 38 heads?

Question 3- if i do all this then basically i have a "stock" 38 with a better rod?

Honda and Clone Engines / Harbor Freight Predator Engines
« on: June 08, 2014, 04:38:09 pm »
Well the Tecumseh died on the kids gokart....trash in the carb lead to gas in the oil which leads to my wallet getting thinner. Looking at the 6.5 Predators and i see Harbor Freight has 3 6.5s with different model numbers. I am looking at them online and will order them online and i dont see a difference between them. Which one to get? The engine will be ran bone stock on a kids gokart. Any help would be great in making a choice. Thanks!!

Chassis / Rear axle selection
« on: May 29, 2014, 12:50:45 am »
I have scratched aluminum as a choice, so wondering to go tube or solid steel? This is not a all out build so would a solid axle really hurt me that bad with performance? Is their like a standard or common width to use? What about the keyway issue for hubs and brakes and stuff? Get a keyway machined where i need them or do they come with a keyway the whole length of the axle? The hubs i have are for 1 1/4 axle and they have a keyway and a squeeze bolt is that enough to keep it in place from moving side to side in cornering? I know i know lots of questions any answers would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / The List
« on: May 13, 2014, 01:02:21 am »
Getting my list together for parts for my Intek 40 engine....and no first on my list is not a new Kohler/Tecumseh/Honda/Kawasaki/Gerbil engine... First on my list is 6611-IV ARC Billet Flywheel. I think i have read on here somewhere this flywheel can be used with the stock starter if a nylon/plastic starter gear is used and the starter is shimmed. Has anyone done this succesfully? High compression with this engine will not be a problem  Also what other parts do i need to get the ignition to fire? Different coil brackets? Also can this flywheel be used on a 44 or 49 Intek with maybe just a hub change? Any answers or advice would be appreciated!!

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Leaky Lucy
« on: May 07, 2014, 03:04:16 am »
Just got home from being at work for the last few days to find my new mower gem sitting in the driveway!! Its a hoodless rusty Toro blah blah blah. Plan to scrap the mower and keep the 407777 Intek 40 in all its oil leaking glory!! Its code is 000407YG. Am i correct to assume this means manufactured in April 7 of 2000? And if that is correct is it more than likely im looking at an engine without the upgraded 49 rods? Outfitted with the 5/8 cam ends? Smaller oil pump? Is the rocker arms all the same thru the years for the 40/44/49? any better than the others? Plan to teardown and inspect and check clearances first thing. Anything in particular i should look for or at specifically?  Any answers would be great! :D

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanguard noob question
« on: April 24, 2014, 11:57:39 pm »
Not had any experince with the Vanguard line of engines. Not looking to buy it but to learn about the models that are out there and difference between models. So i ask this question...would this model be a good base to start an engine build with?    http://www.ebay.com/itm/23hp-Briggs-Stratton-Vert-Engine-1-1-8-Dx3-5-32-L-Vanguard-16Amp-386777-0118-/360755482227?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53feb3ce73.   Performance parts readily available? Rods, flyweels, piston upgrades and such...or is this oddball for some reason? Is that a fair price? Any info would be appreciated on this example or anything in this line of engines to avoid. Thanks!

Newcomers / Newbie from Arkansas
« on: April 22, 2014, 03:38:29 pm »
Hello everyone! I would first like to thank everyone for this great site! I have popped in over the last few months to read and gather info...very informative. Though i will admit some of it is over my head  :bash:. I have a few basic questions to ask first and hope this is the place to put them, if not please excuse the mistake and direct to where i need to be. First question...what do yall mean by an Offy motor?? an offset twin cylinder maybe?? Also since i live in central Arkansas which association would be closest for me to become a part of? I tried to research it but came to dead sites and am still confused as i started . All of them seem very far away for me. A link to it would be VERY appreciated.
