Coffee Shop / New job!!
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:47:34 pm »
So i have been looking for a job for some time and i finely found one at a lawn mower shop of all places.  Their are so many "junk" mowers setting out back its not even funny i just want to bring them all home. Their are 2 old wheel horse mowers and a cub cadet that i really want but he wont let them go he says he plans on restoring them and keeping them for him self. Then their is this nice looking 700 trans setting on the shelf but i think he would notice it missing. This place has been a mower shop since 1987 so yal can imagine what might be setting out in the yard. We are living with my inlaws right now and as soon as we find a place of our own I think i might be able to talk the owner out of a few mowers to bring home and play with. I plan on getting a few random yard pics to post up but i keep forgetting to do so while I'm there.

Post your Pics! / bringing home the parts
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:28:33 pm »
The tow mower is stock all I have done to it is remove the deck so chill.  I was in the back yard working on my race mower and the neighbor comes over and says he has a old mower he dont want anymore and asks me if i want it.  Sight un seen I put the trailer on the tow mower and go to get it and he shows me what he has and I load it up and take off with it.  Their is not much to it but maybe a buldable frame the 15hp OHV motor is pretty much trash and it has a realy weard rear end set up in it.  Never the less its some more parts I can use I guess.

If you look close in the top pic you can see the back of the race mower sticking up in the air it just looks like a black box sticking up.
Just thought I would show my parts hauler and the parts it hauled.

Briggs Flathead / flatty 28 building tips
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:38:34 pm »
I'm going to be taking my 28 flatty apart before to long to put in my free OHV rod.  Right now the motor is stock down to the air filter and muffler.  All that I plan on doing is swapping the OHV rod and piston for the stock flatty stuff and ill be putting the OHV air horn on the stock flatty carb so I can run a clamp on K&N type air filter.  My question is what else should I do while I have the motor apart?  I have thought about getting out the dremmel and opening the ports in the block as well as milling the block between the valves and the cly for a little more flow.  Also thought about angle milling the head so that I cut more off the cly side and leave the valve side alone so I don't hurt flow any?  I know rooster preaches the oil mod for the oppys does the same thing need to be done for the single clys?  I am trying to use as many stock parts that I can so keep this as cheap as I can.

Is the 15hp OHV motor syncro balanced like the flattys are?  If they are not can I put the OHV crank in my flatty block and get the syncro weights out of there?  I have an almost complete 15 hp OHV (only missing flywheel fins and tins) motor is their any other good parts that I can rob from it to go into my flatty?

Prob a dumb question but how much havoc would it cause to just leave the syncro balancer out of the motor?

Tires / getting rims off?
« on: January 22, 2011, 10:38:26 pm »
Any one have any tips on how to get off wheels that are rusted to the axle with out messing up the wheels or the axle?  I have a 820 gear box for that came out of my new rig and both back rims are rusted in place I have been soaking one in wd40 for about a week now and i tried to set the rim on a ledge and hammer out the axle and it wont move.  Do I have any other option then getting new axles and new rims?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 15 hp OHV
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:13:40 am »
I just picked up a free mower it has a 15hp OHV motor on it or at least that's what the hood says. The motor has been setting for a while with no air cleaner so the carb is gunked up from the rain getting in it the motor is also missing the flywheel fins and the fly wheel key looks kinda screwy and is missing all the tins from the motor. My question is this motor worth trying to find the parts to fix it or would i be better off junking this motor and starting fresh?

Ive never been inside of a OHV motor so i have no idea about them but the flattys come easy to me vie built gobs of them and made killer power like to the point of about 40hp from a 5hp rotor tiller motor.

Briggs Flathead / Carb swap?
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:21:54 pm »
Will the intake and carb from a Briggs 15.5 hp OHV single fit on my flatty 28? It looks close and it seems to have a bigger plastic intake and a nice smooth up draft air horn that will accept a clamp on filter. The carb needs to be rebuilt bad it sat out back for who knows how long getting rained in/on.

Another question is the OHV carb has 2 wires going into the main jet of the carb can I just cut those off and let it eat or what would need to be done there?  The carb looks to be the same as the stock 28 carb so I wonder if I could use the 28 main needle and bowl on the OHV carb?

This might not work at all but it's setting there and it looks better than what I have?

Briggs Flathead / Smaller fly wheel?
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:18:54 am »
Has any one put a smaller fly wheel from a smaller motor on a bigger motor? Aka when i used to race karts we would use the Briggs 3hp flywheel on our 5hp motors with a bracket to move the coil in to reach the new smaller fly wheel.

Briggs Flathead / Oppy exhaust?
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:35:04 pm »
I have a Briggs oppy 42 and I'm trying to come up with some ideas for a exhaust that I can build for my mower. I would like it be be some what quiet but still make power if that is even possible?  So far the only oppy exhausts that I've seen are the ones made from iron plumbing pipe screwed together and ran under the mower.  I have also thought about duel stacks witch I can fill with steel wool to muffle the sound some any thoughts on this?

Briggs Flathead / Briggs 18 hp cheap mods?
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:28:36 pm »
I have a Murray (I think) garden tractor with a Briggs 18hp oppy motor on it that I plan on building in to my 2nd go cart type thing.  I was just wondering if their any cheap or free mods that can be done to this motor for a little more power. The 18 hp has the carb with the built in fuel pump it was my father in-laws old mower he said he had to replace the fuel pump about once a year so I was wondering if their might be something any better or more reliable?

My first build was a Murray with a Briggs 28 on it biasicley all I did was pulley down to a 6" on the rear with the stocker on the motor and I added a gas pedal hooked to the stock governor with1 coil removed from the stock spring for a few more rpm.

Briggs Flathead / getting back in the game
« on: November 14, 2010, 11:34:04 pm »
I used to build and race go karts when I was 12-13 years old and I'm now 24.  we only dealt with the briggs 5hp raptor 2 motor right as I was getting out of karting the raptor 3 stuff was coming out.  I'm looking to get into mower racing with a briggs 12.5hp flatty.  I'm looking for a few places to read up on and freshen up on the new build tactics for these motors and some places to get some performance parts for them.

I also have the opportunity to get a Kohler M18 for my mower build are these have any place on the track? are their any performance parts out there for them or any performance tips for them?

At this point anything would help

If any of you might have heard of Shaarp racing motors chances I had a hand in building it.

Kohler Engines / Kohler M18 fuel pressure?
« on: November 14, 2010, 10:58:41 pm »
I have a Kohler magnum 18hp and I think the fuel pump is dead it will start and run fine as long as a keep spraying carb cleaner in the carb but as soon as I stop spraying the motor dies.  I'm wanting to run a electric fuel pump on it but I'm wondering if a standard automotive fuel pump would have to much pressure?  I would assume that since all automotive carbs take 3.5-5psi that a mower carb would be about the same right?

Kohler Engines / kohler magnum 18 could use a little help
« on: November 07, 2010, 12:21:13 am »
Ok so this is not in a racing mower in fact its in my Marty J mower that I use to mow with.  This mower came with a 48" deck and now has a 50" deck and it is a zero turn with duel hyrdo stats.  little to say that this mower could use a little help in the power dept.  I have done a little searching but so far has found nothing for the Kohler twins out there  have found plenty for the K motors but nothing for the magnums.  Any one have any ideas besides a bigger motor?

Other Interesting Builds / murray mowcart of sorts?
« on: November 06, 2010, 11:43:54 pm »
Hello this will be my first post here and im new to mower building.  I do have a automotive back ground as well as I raced go carts on a dirt oval for about 2 years but that was 10 years ago.  I have a oldish murray mower with a 12.5hp briggs motor and a 42" deck i plan on building this into a kiddy cart sorta thing.  This will be a low budget build so a lot will remain stock.  I don't want this thing too fast so i think i will only go down to a 5-6" rear pulley and just using the stock front pulley.

A few questions I have is how can I make this thing any lower to the ground?  I also had thoughts of shaving about .010-.015" off the head for a little more power any thoughts on this?  The motor is a factory remain that we bought about 3 years ago for our old snapper so its pretty fresh.  Also about picking up a stock take off harley muffler and building a exhaust that runs inder the left flood board to exit right in front of the left rear tire.

here are a few pics of what I have the hood wont fit on right now the motor still has the snapper exhaust on it.
yes all 4 tires are different sizes but it was like that when I got it I only paid $100 for it and used it about 6 months before I got my Marty J zero turn.
