Title: 20 hp vanguard carb trouble
Post by: MTD #77 on March 27, 2010, 09:39:26 pm
Ok i have a 20 hp vanguard and it has a 2 barrell carb on it. It will run fine with no load on it but when u get on the gas in like 3rd or 4th gear it will only cut down to one cylinder. And its the right cylinder that is cutting out but when it does this it will throw flames out of the right side exoust pipe. And ive torn the carb down 3 times and cleaned it all out and it still does it. Thanks 4 the help if anyone can help... lol

Did you check the coil or the spark plug?

Well i took a timeing light and hooked it up to the right cylinder and it seems to be fireing every time and i pulled the plug out and it was a powdery white color and for the race i ran tonight i took a carb and intake off of a 16 hp vanguead and it ran ok but it was running really rich 4 some reasion. I let it sit there and run while i went to draw and i walked over to it and hit the gas and it looked like i was running a deseal engin. lol but it cleared up.

EC has new race prepped  nikki style carbs (Bigger Venturi and Bigger Throttle bore) for less than 200.00 Just got em in. Havn't even advertised them yet. Don't have an exact price. They are not polished out but the flow on them as is is as good as the standard 20 hp carb that is bored and polished. If you have any kind a built twin these should wake em up. Will work for any vanny or Intek Motor. They can be polished out but the cost will go up. We have 20 on the shelf...Call us Monday 9 to 5 central for more specifics.

Lol yeah, that might have to be my next up grade too. But i was just wondering if anyone can help me figure out wats wrong with my carb i have now. I put it back on my mower yesterday and started it up. It will iddle really high now and this is even with the idle screw takin out and it will run on both cylinders only at idle. Ill hit the gas and it does nothing till i give it full throttle it will just hit on one cylinder. Im compleatly lost about this.  :(

Try swapping with a known good carb. If problem still happens then problem is in the motor. If it fixs the problem, then it is the carb. When you broke down the carb, was the bowl full? if so, you could have trash in the idle paassageways. I had a problem like that and I took off the bowl. I had to take pipe cleaner to them and carb cleaner. I got a lot of varnish from old gas out it. I took the jets and cleaned them with cutting torch tip cleaner(wire type). Put it back togather and has been running good ever since. You can try this, but I am no carb expert like Superman is.

Well 4 the race saterday i put on a 16 hp carb and intake and it did ok. it was running WAY rich tho... lol But the otherday i had my 2 barrel carb and intake on it and gas kept blowing out of the overflow tube and i looked at the float and no gas was in it so it didnt have i hole in it and i took i longer neiddle in it and it stopped the over flow probablum but do u think i should put the shorter neiddle back in it?? Do u think thats my probablum?

That is a question for Superman. i would check the short needle and seat area. You may see where it maybe damaged and worn. Attach a piece of clean fuel line and blow thru it. While doing this, move float up and down to check the flow. when it up it should not allow any flow. If it does, that is where your problem is. Like I said I am no expert, I use a logical approach to solve my problems.Hope this helps.
