Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 845759 Heavy Duty Starter, Briggs Mod 28/31
« on: January 04, 2019, 09:26:19 pm »
Afternoon All
(Sat afternoon down here)

I was working on my engine today, which included running it a few times until suddenly my Hi Torque starter decided not to respond at all, I've tried by passing the solenoid, using an alternate power source for both the large input and the small blade connector but all I get is nothing, no life from the starter. Could anyone explain how to tear down this unit or advise if theirs such a thing as an exploded drawing for this starter?
It's times like these that being 12,000 miles away becomes a pain in the butt

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Torque settings for ARC Flywheel
« on: October 29, 2016, 03:01:32 pm »
HI, I've re-installed an ARC billet flywheel back on a 30ci vanny I purchased, not sure what torque to use on the crankshaft nut. My Vanguard repair manual states 350 ft lb / 203 Nm.
These seem very high, so far I have it at 80 ft Ib and left it there.
Any or all feedback appreciated.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanny 23hp Heads
« on: October 18, 2016, 10:57:03 pm »
I've been reading a few older posts on here that recommend using the 23 hp v twin  heads on a 16hp v twin for better flow & volume. My question is how would I identify 23 hp heads, do they have any unique markings, the reason is i have a couple of spare sets of heads that were given to me but the previous owner wasn't sure size engine they cam off?
thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Broken Cam - 3 pieces
« on: August 27, 2016, 09:50:33 pm »
Hi All, managed to snap the cam into 3 pieces last Sunday, getting 2 of them out was easy, they feel out once the sump was off, however the tip of the cam is stuck in the block.
Any suggestions on the best way to remove it without causing any further damage?
Any advice would be appreciated
Cheers

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / A funny thing happened on the way to the......
« on: February 03, 2016, 11:36:49 pm »
Finish line.

Whilst racing last Sunday my mower decided to run well for the first few laps then run out of power and stall.
We restarted it by drizzling  fuel into the air filter but it would continue running.

When back in the pits we disconnected the fuel line to the carbs from the pump and manually filled the line, we then restarted the engine and it ran but the level of the fuel in the line never dropped, so we concluded it was a jammed needle valve ( our decision was supported by a very bumpy track, and the float was bouncing up and jamming the needle and I also tried to blow the fuel into the carbs without success)

I have pulled the carry apart, taken the float and valve out and tried to jam the needle by pressing it firmly with my finger, but alas every time I turn the carbs up the right way it drops out as it should.

I'm running the Nikki two barrel, the model with the square bowl and the complex casket.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers
Grant.

Driveline / 700 Peerless output shaft chewed through houseing
« on: December 13, 2015, 09:04:16 pm »
This has happened to a few of our 700 series boxes, any suggestions as to what it might be?
I'm wondering if the chain is too tight.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Chrome Moly push rod ends
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:17:54 pm »
Would anyone know if it's possible to source just the press fit ball ends for the pushrods, given I'm 8000 miles away from the U.S. of A it would be easier to source just those bits.
Kind regards
Grant

Running a 35-3030 cam, chrome molly push rods and roller rockers. What would you recommend as a starting point for valve clearance?
