Driveline / steel input and bevel in 800 series???
« on: August 20, 2015, 05:03:32 pm »
does anyone have information on what model of 800 series transaxles came with the 778153 and 778154 input and bevel steel gears?  I found Jerb's list of 700's, just no info on 800 series.

I was thinking about seeking out the john deere tractors from the 80's for starters...

Coffee Shop / How to properly measure coil bind?
« on: February 28, 2014, 11:47:26 pm »
Hey guys, been reading around on the internet and I just need a little clarification on measuring coil bind.  At full lift, say, I can stick my feeler gauge between each of 3 coils (within a single spring), with two measuring .025" and one measuring .035".  Do I add up all these tolerances (measuring .085") and that is my coil bind spec?  Or is the spec the largest of the three individual measurements I am able to take with the feeler gauges?

Coffee Shop / hitch mounted mower hauler
« on: February 12, 2014, 09:30:33 pm »
Hey everyone,
My super ratty trailer is starting to scare even me...  So I was thinking about trying to save gas and improve driveability by using a hitch mounted mower hauler.  Do any of you have one that works well for you?  recommendations on the model if you went out and bought it?

This will be on the back of an s-10 or in an emergency, a RWD cutlass.  Frames on both vehicles are in good shape as far as rust goes.  The s-10 has very stiff springs in the rear, even with a mower in my bed, I still have a rake going on, so I am sure my springs can take the extra weight.  The Cutlass has air shocks in the back.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Coffee Shop / Digitron. Do you have recommendations?
« on: February 05, 2014, 08:12:09 pm »
Hey all.  I am considering getting a new digitron.  Have you guys ever used a DT52k RE2 unit?  It comes with two EGT probes, and does recording.  I think it also has a separate optional beacon you can use to get personal lap times.  What are your thoughts, or recommendations for this or a similar unit?  Thanks!

Coffee Shop / Horizontal 42 opposed... Worth anything?
« on: November 03, 2013, 07:38:00 pm »
While racing at nationals in Iowa this past year, I saw some guy with a mean looking Horizontal opposed on an fxs.  He was having issues with it at the time, but had glowing revues for it's performance when it was behaving.  I came across a stock one recently, and I could probably get it.  I have seen only 2 of these so far, and I was wondering are they desirable for racing?  Is this worth snagging up?  Also did they ever make a pressure lube version of this horizontal version?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Governor rapidly flutters during crank
« on: April 11, 2013, 08:56:24 pm »
Anyone know what would cause a governer arm to violently move the throttle full open to full closed rapidly as the motor is cranked?  It won't start up unless you physically hold the throttle lever with your finger.  Once started, it will not have any problems running smoothly.  Governer oil slinger teeth damaged?  What are your thoughts, this is for my buddy who called today and I am not sure what is going on.  Also, the small spring around the governor rod is connected at both ends.  Thanks

Tecumseh Engines / updated oil mods for ohv 17 -Important!!!
« on: April 10, 2013, 09:56:34 pm »
While tearing my oil pan off to replace a blown sump gasket, I discovered that the epoxy used by someone to seal the oil supply hole in balance shaft journal had come loose!.  The epoxy came out as a formed casting to how it hardened, and was not sealing anything at all.  This epoxy is subjected not only to heat and thermal expansion (which the epoxy will have a different expansion rate than aluminum or any other material you put it in) but also oil pressure as well.  These factors all help to loosen and then remove the epoxy rendering your oil pressure next to nil.  After finding this, I pulled the rod and took the crank out, to find the main journals heavily grooved and the rod bearing looking pitted and all in all bad.  Luckily I happened to stumble upon this before the engine blew.

The fix, aside from getting another block and crank, is to take the star torx bolt out of the oil supply hole that has been drilled in the block casting for this balance shaft.  The thread is 1/4" 28 pitch (fine thread).  I took a quality tap (the cheap ones have less thread cutting length on them) and tapped all the way into the journal of the balance shaft. You do not need to tap all the way to the other side, just the side the bolt plug was blocking off.  I used threaded rod from fastenal (like $4) and bought some ALL METAL locking nuts.  Applying some locktite to the threaded rod, I put it in all the way so that it traveled across the bore into the oil supply side from the upper main, threading it into that untapped hole about 2 or 3 turnes.  Then use your nut to lock the threaded rod even more.  Be sure to blow out the hole (spraying from the upper crank main) towards the balance shaft to remove the chunks of metal that result as you send the rod into the untapped part of the oil supply hole.  This mod is best done with the crank out of the block if you intend on threading the 2 or 3 turns into the untapped side.
Also, the tap will not have enough threaded portion to give you a clean threaded hole all the way through, but the good quality tap will have a nice fluted base that will eat away the threads as it passes further into the block. This is not really what the tap is designed for but actually works out well.  I have done this and it seems to work wonderful.  Good luck!

Tecumseh Engines / New replacement OHV17 piston rings
« on: April 07, 2013, 07:44:38 am »
30580 is the Hastings part number for both standard compression rings.  That number is for each individual compression ring, so you will need 2 per piston. They do not make an oil control ring that will fit.  I have not checked around with other manufacturers of rings yet to see if another would have that, so if you guys figure out that PLEASE post here so we can have the complete set.  The 30580 is not exactly what the Tec ring is, but it fits the 1/16 land in the rings, and is manufactured exactly for that bore diameter.   I am sure there are oversized rings that Hastings makes for this bore, when I get those numbers I will post them here for the .010" and .020" bores.  Both rings MUST be installed with the BEVEL SIDE UP for this aftermarket ring application, regardless of what the service manual states for ring orientation. I have used these rings successfully in my engine with no issues as of yet. The only physical differences with these rings are the thickness from the piston towards the cylinder wall.  They are a smidge smaller, but that the same thickness in the lands for side clearance.

Coffee Shop / database for alternate pistons applicability
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:10:29 am »
Due to some manufacturers going out of business / scarceness of parts, or just for performance upgrades over stock designs, I am looking for a database to look up alternate piston assemblies.  This would help people with all kinds of mower engines for sure.  Does anyone know a link or search method for searching by:  bore size vs wrist pin diameter, top of piston design, compression height, etc.  Essentially any technical search database containing charts of this info other than just poking around in the dark on what seems like an ADD nightmare.  Either post here or PM if you wanna keep it on the DL.  Thanks.

Coffee Shop / The perils and pleasures of driving in Georgia
« on: February 19, 2013, 07:34:42 pm »
Two things mainly: First off if you have a light out on your car or trailer and get a ticket for defective equipment.... It is not a fix it ticket, and it will cost you $160!  I drive to florida at least 4 times a year, and it always seems the guantlet is around miles markers 87-80 (I-75)  Ashburn police (not state or county) are very vigilant there.

Now on to the positive thing to know.  If you are traveling on I-75 from near the GA/Tenn border, there is a gas station that sells Non-ethanol gas off of exit 326 (Carbondale rd.), in Dalton!!!  It is hard to find places like these anymore, let alone AMERICAN OWNED and the owner runs the store himself.  Totally a mom and pop place, and they speak English!   Also it seemed he was pretty busy which is great when you consider that the fuel is probably not sitting in the tanks too long loosing it's octane rating.  Pretty much a jackpot find in all categories.  So when headed south for McDonough in April stop and and fill up all your stuff, and on the way back!  The owner of Carbondale Smart Mart is Terry Gazaway, (706) 277-2882, if you have an questions feel free to contact him.

Chassis / john deere 111 exhaust question
« on: January 18, 2013, 06:01:16 pm »
Hey guys,
I have built a john Deere 111, with a Tec OHV 17 on it for the GP class.  I never finished making the exhaust on it, and I was wondering if anyone out there running this chassis or a similar one with a Tec ohv could post pictures here or PM me with some for the exhaust construction and routing.  It not so cut and dry with the geometry of how low the tec head is to the chassis, and the chassis's own geometry.  I just need to see some good pics so I can make something work.  Thanks!

Tecumseh Engines / OHV17 piston pin question
« on: November 25, 2012, 07:19:09 pm »
He everyone,
been doing some research here and wanted to know the piston pin diameter of an OHV17 engine.  The tecumseh spec sheets do not give a listing for the single, but it does give a listing for the twin in the twin manual.  The spec for the twin is .6251-.6256 for the piston pin.  A post made earlier on this site mentions to bore the twin connecting rod (billet from ARC) .050 over the current diameter to fit into the single.  So I am assuming just add .050" to the twin spec to equal the single?  It would seem to be the case.  Also, is the piston pin an interference fit to the bore in the rod?  Or does it float within the rod?  Now, if it is a floater like this, does that mean the spec given for the twin is for the bore in the piston where the pin goes through?  Or just the pin itself?  Thanks and I appreciate your input.

Coffee Shop / Racing in South Florida!
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:08:42 am »
Ok...  Just went down to Ft. Meyers over the weekend for a race.  Not only the the racers extremely friendly, but the track has changed quite a bit since last year when I visited Grasscar.....  They removed the shell material, put down EXTREMELY smooth clay, and the straights are monstrously long.  I had to use a larger sprocket size on the transmission i have never used just to get the gearing right, and I have been to many tracks around the country.  Not only this, but the corners are very long and sweeping.  This is an FXT or FXS dream!  I don't race that style, but seriously, if you want to get your FXt/s mower up to speeds never seen on a track at nationals, this is where you should go.  Also, Sean Kennedy and co. are really nice and down to earth.  Not to mention the stellar weather.  It's a win-win down there.  So go check out Grasscar and pay em a visit!   Wish I was down long enough to pay Charles Butcher in Avon Park a visit.  Have heard they have a new track design as well.....

Driveline / custom pulley for needed offset on flipped 820
« on: May 31, 2012, 10:53:57 am »
Hey everyone, I just picked up a john deere 111 and I am using an 820 flipped upside down.  It is mounted 1 inch below the top of the c channel frame.  I cannot bring it up any higher becuase I will not have enough ground clearance if I want to run the 16" tires.  The saving grace on this 820 is that it has a deep snout for the input shaft, which if I had a pulley that would drop down and ride maybe an 1/8th" off the bottom of the case, I could use just one belt instead of the jack shaft.  So essentially, I need to drop the pulley about 1.25 inch from its original location.  I was thinking use a weldable hub and put a plate on it, drilling holes to put spacers to attach to another pulley.  Don't know If I have physical clearance for that as I need to run the smallest pulley possible (3.5" pulley clears the snout)  I don't have the 017 kit with the gearing change.  So I must overdrive it.  Any suggestions are much appreciated!  Have any of you ran into this type of situation?

Coffee Shop / Anyone have dreams about mowers?
« on: May 21, 2012, 02:02:48 pm »
So....  I have had some really weird dreams about mowers and engines.  One of these is a recurring dream.  The dream starts off where I am looking around, and there are piles of engines scattered in a circular manner.  There are about 2 or 3 piles, sometimes there are endless piles.  Oppys and briggs singles, non AVS make up the piles, with a few other random twins that I am not sure what they are.  In the center of the circular piles are appliances either on fire or smoldering.  There will be tractors racing around the piles, with the racers faces blacked out.  The tractors seem to be the living breathing beings, and the people are more like machines, or just inanimate drones riding on the tractors.  Almost like the people are slaves to the mowers will, and are completely oblivious to this idea.  The tractors seem to be "on the hunt"  for something I do not know.  They remind me of wasps swarming around trying to find the intruder.  Oh, and all the engines are clean and polished, except for the twins..... Go figure.

Does anyone else have crazy mower dreams?  Or at least have dreams themed around racing mowers?
