Coffee Shop / broken coil mount
« on: May 13, 2016, 06:45:15 pm »
Has anybody broken a coil mounting ear off the block, that was able to be repaired?  And if so, how, or what is the preferred method?  Its a clean break, and the block is used, so I am unsure of how clean the aluminium can get for welding it. Thanks, Jim.

Briggs Flathead / stroke vs rod length
« on: July 11, 2014, 05:38:56 pm »
Question:    which would you rather have; shorter stroke with a longer rod,  or a longer stroke with a shorter rod.....all other items in/on the engine, in both scenarios, to build optimum torque? This is a flathead, so cylinder filling is important.....

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / cam question
« on: February 04, 2014, 10:49:04 am »
ok, I bought a used aftermarket cam, and there is no passage drilled from the block assembly end, to the check ball on the pan end....no oil passage through the cam . this does not seem right to me at all, which is why I am asking if anyone else has ever run into this with an aftermarket cam grind on a briggs blank w/out compression release balls. I believe I will be drilling it through, as no hole, means no oil supply would reach the sidecover side of the cam. am I thinking correctly? thanks, Jim.

Driveline / tapered bearing hubs
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:44:07 am »
has anyone tried the front kart hubs that use the tapered bearing on the outside? and does anyone know of a hub that implements 2 of the tapered bearing assemblies rather than just 1? it seems a waste to just put 1 in the hub, leaving the standard bearing to get beat and "crushed" when tightened too much.

Coffee Shop / opinions needed please.....
« on: June 02, 2013, 12:49:58 pm »
ok, here is what i am dealing with, and very frustrated at this point. in February, i ordered my major parts for my engine, from an ARC dealer. in early May, I opened the rod and bearing box to mock up the piston in the engine to cut the top. when I took the rod bearings out of the bag, there was nothing separating the two halves, nor was there a rubber band around them to keep them from marring each other....here are the pics of the "new" bearings that came with the rod:

notice the black permanent marker ink that is in the oil hole in the insert on the right...exactly the way these came out of the bag, marker, and scratches.

so, I place an order last week with another ARC dealer, trying to get my engine together for the season, as i still have not raced this year  here are pics of the new bearings i received this time, from a different dealer:

that's what i got straight out of the bag, nothing separating them, nor a rubber band to keep them together....even worse shape than the others :noplease: :bash: I am about to lose it, and it's a good thing it is Sunday, so i can gather myself, and my thoughts, and ask the Lord to help me, before i make a few phone calls tomorrow, and hope I don't say something rash. If this were your situation, what would you do????

Coffee Shop / AVS rod bearings
« on: May 10, 2013, 01:48:26 pm »
i am looking at placing an order with EC, but, i do not see that they have replacement rod bearings for the ARC AVS rods....i would order just the rod bearings from somewhere else if i had to, but i also need some other parts from EC. does anyone know if they have the replacement bearing inserts, and they just are not listed?? thanks- Jim.

Racing Mower Builds / MTD step-thru C/P
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:56:53 pm »
well after 2 years running my FXT, i need to get out of the kart seat for my back's sake.....sooo, i have decided to make a C/P for this year, and hopefully my back will thank me for sitting on a mower instead of in it...
i started with a Montgomery Wards (MTD) step-thru style chassis:

here is the bracing at the front

bracing at the rear, and the tranny plate

more rear pics, top of mower, and bracing to tranny plate

front axle beam

engine plate....i cut out the sheet metal all the way across, then welded in a 1/4" plate.

cut the sheet metal, and dropped the battery down into the frame

where the fuel tank will go

tranny tucked under the fender as much as possible, i will still have to make a small cover for it

overall view, i still have not put my grill/hood mounts on yet....more pics after i get those on

i will not have to clearance this rear fender section, i will just have to cut and modify the bottom part to look better at the running boards....i could have used the original rear fender section, however, this one has no shifter holes in them, and the seat pan well area is deeper, allowing me to keep the seat as low as possible, and at the same time, not have to do any sort of modifications to clear the tires.

it will be getting a built 33 AVS, and use a 700 peerless. i am using 13x6.50-6 turfmasters on 6x7.25" rims on the rear ( local club rules allow them) and the fronts are 13x5-6 turf tech II's ( same tread design as turfmasters) on 6x6 rims on the front. i am really pleased with the way the whole mowchine is coming together so far, and i will post more pics as i make progress, hopefully soon.

Driveline / EC billet trans pulley's
« on: March 10, 2013, 02:47:34 pm »
i am setting my tranny plate today, and i am using a stock steel pulley on the input shaft to mock it up. if i use it one way, the pulley rides super close to the plate, and just clears the mounting bolts. if i flip it the other way, it gives allot of clearance to the plate and bolt heads. i plan on using a billet pulley from EC, and would like to know if it sits close to the plate, or further away, or can it be flipped to run the same as the steel pulley where it can be close, or further away from the plate. thanks- Jim.

« on: March 10, 2013, 11:53:23 am »
i need help to answer a question. i am selling the stock camshaft from a 33AVS, and one question i got was if it came with the compression release mechanism. is there even one on these? i can not find one in any parts schematics i have looked at. thanks- Jim.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / intek AVS breather
« on: March 04, 2013, 07:17:11 pm »
will the stock breather be ok, if i just put a small filter on the end of the tube, on a built Intek AVS single? thanks, Jim.
