Briggs Flathead / Re: Setting your carburator correctly

As i mentioned eariler this is something i have been playing around with I purchased a wideband oxygen sensor gauge kit from ebay for around 80 buck I made a adapter to slip on to my exhaust instead of welding a sensor on to my pipe it works good for fine tuning at the track so hope.

Briggs Flathead / Setting your carburator correctly

(This is a test project of mine)
do at own risk!!

I pull 8 hp briggs motors and as everyone knows the old style carbs are junk for pulling however it is easy to bolt on a new style carb. using a intake either factory or aftermarket or homemade. I like to try to find a better mouse trap so here goes.

I have learned that if you take a single wire oxygen sensor (for a car) and install on you exhaust pipe you can take a multimeter and attach it to you sensor and set your carburator so it will not lean out at high rpms. You dont have hook up and power because it will create it own output voltage. based on my test at full throttle my meter will show .400 mv or 2 volts dc. which converts over to a 14-7 fuel air mixture. again you can read up on this as I did it seems to help out setting the carb. this way you dont have to guess and hope your carb is set right you can even check your adjustment at the track and based on air temps outside you know your carb is set right and wont lean out or be too rich.

As for the transmission it is the same one that can be found in the massy fergerson 7 & 8 as well as the john deere 60 and 70 they hold up good providing you lock the rear end we always ran a 6 inch pulley on the tranny and a 4.5 adjustable pulley on the motor.
