Title: New guy from TN
Post by: Gammey4 on May 06, 2014, 08:49:08 pm
Just saying hi from the Nashville area. My wife and kids decided that they want a racing mower. There uncle has one they got to try and were hooked. So far I've got a craftsman lt1000 with a briggs 20.5 oppy and a hydrostatic trans and a bad front axle. I know I need to find a different transaxle but any other pointers I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the welcome George. I registered on that site as well. In case I missed it, is there a rule book for the BTMRA on that site I could download?

Just got a free craftsman dyt4000! 21 hp intek vtwin, should be a better starting point than the lt1000 with a 20.5 oppy and hydrostatic trans that I currently have.

Pointer #1: Read before you build!!
Pointer #2: Your close to the King of Mower racing - Super George Herrin!
Though were not sure if he's the "King" like Richard Petty, or Elvis??

I've been reading, a lot. I know there are better motors and chassis to start with. I just want to make sure I get the chassis dialed in, brakes right etc, before building up a better motor. George lives about three hours from me and ec is about an hour. My only goal with this build is to teach my kids some more mechanic/welding skills and have fun with my family. I do look forward to going to the races and meeting everyone.

There is no better chassis to start with than a free one!!
Some of us build certain chassis for the wheelbase. Some build others because they are easy to build. Some build because not very many people race a certain chassis, and were tired of looking at MTDs, Murray's and Craftsman. Lol
Some people build what they have.

Your reasons for building are the best. I wouldn't be doing what I am now if my Dad hadn't stuck a wrench in my hand. And you'll never get back the time you don't spend with your kids. I spent most of my children's younger years just trying to keep a roof over them and food in them. Take it from someone who knows, you can replace the memories you don't have with your children, it's replaced with regret and sorrow that just like memories you carry with you for life!!
