Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: 33 AVS

They are not fully pressurized as one is lead to believe. That is why they have the slinger in them. remove the flapper pieces on the slinger and install a slinger or you will blow it up. I have had several over the years with cross drilled cranks why I got no clue because they are not a pressurized motor.
The only fully pressurized briggs single is the 26 cube vanguard.

I have a 31 avs model number starting with 31Qxxx. It is full pressure, from the factory with no oil slinger. I have been racing this motor for 2 years with no problem. I've been told 1000 times there is no such thing as a full pressure 31avs, there is. I'll also tell you they are almost impossible to find, I havn't found another one yet used. You can buy them new various places on-line, only thing is if you call and ask them if it's full pressure they will say yes if the motor sticker says so but you will be dissapointed when you get it and it's got a slinger in it. I just got lucky & got mine from a local small engine guy that replaced a motor under warrenty & had this in a box, didn't even know what I had when I got it as it was my first motor.

retainers are red.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you Ryan. If i knew what the springs were that are in my motor now it would help. They just have alot of races on them and I want to replace them before they break.

Here is a pic of the spring and the retainer. i measured from the bottom of the retainer to the bottom of the spring at around 1.23"

Those are Rocket Rons retainers, they are not designed for stock valves/keepers (the hole is too big and the keepers will eventually pull thru). Rocket ron will tell you they are fine but they are not!!!!! They are milled for aftermarket valves with the thicker retainers. Look at a set of EC retainers (aluminum colored) for a single w/stock valves & compare it side by side to Rocket Rons, which I have after having my stock keepers pull thru one of my Rocket Ron retainers (stock motor, springs, stock everything except retainers) and you will see the difference! EC's retainers are far superior in fittment and strength, they are thicker and do not wear thru like Rocket Rons do. We are changing all of retainers over to EC's to prevent any further costly issues. Last comment & I'll shut it, if you want any possibility of customer service, call EC's. If you don't, get your parts from the other guy and your on your own!!!

Driveline / How much gear oil in an 820 peerless
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:03:50 pm »
Changing oil in our little racer with a 820 peerless & for the life of me can't remember how much gear oil to put back in it. We use Lucas oil. We have a fill hole in the top so we don't have to pull the tranny & split it, unfortunatly can't see well enough to see the level inside. Just wondering if anybody knows off hand how many ounces it takes to fill the bottom case halve (or a little below)?  Thanks in advance for your help.

heres a pic, probably about 20 degrees to the left in order to have access to the valve cover.

I run mine backwards & angled a little off to the side, had to to make it fit in my chassis. Ive had no problems with oiling or consumption but I am running a full pressure crank. Only a little bit of oil in the valve cover when checking/adjusting valves. Interesting discussion though, I honestly never thought of the oil in the cylinder. I can tell you this, my cylinder walls look pretty much perfect after a full race season.

Anyone tried these yet? Wondering what the actual physical size & compound is like compared to a Carlisle.

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy!!! :omg:  All 33 and the 31 rod journals are the same size. They are both 1.48 ( 1-1/2"). The 28's are 1.249 (1-1/4"). All the avs cranks, no matter if it's a 28, 31 or 33, have a larger main journal (where they go through the oil pan), than the non avs motors.

Yea, I thought 1.48 sounded right for the rod journal. Next question, who's got a full pressure AVS crank for me?  :woo:

Are you saying there is no weight difference between the 28, 31 and 33 piston?

Lester

No he's not. He has the weights cut and ready, that's the start. Then he needs your piston, rings, pin, rod etc. , welds the weights on then grinds as necessary to get a proper balance with your actual parts you will be using. I ran one all season with no problems, Tommy does a great job! (in fact he sent me my parts and made sure I didn't pay him until we had it all together and running and was happy with it). Great guy to deal with and knows what he's doing!

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 31/33 AVS crank specs

Anyone know if there is a difference in journal sizes, stroke etc... between the 31 & 33 avs cranks. I'm wanting to have Tommy D. balance another full pressure crank for me but can't find another 31 with one in it. I know alot of the newer 33 avs's have them but didn't know if mag,rod & pto journal's and stroke were the same. If the 33 crank will work in the 31 it will make my life easier!!

Thanks in advance!!

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: 31 avs magnesium piston part #?
« on: October 17, 2011, 05:14:23 pm »
I guess I need to brush up on my thread reading. I went back to what I thought was a 31 mag piston, and they did say mag 31, but the way it showed was not the way it was stated in the thread. Sorry if I misslead anyone, but I did find the part #s for all of this. LEFT search, 31 mag piston, and you will get threads and part#s!

Now danget, You guys convinced me there is no 31 mag piston. Big Al, I tried your search as suggested and come up with nothing on a 31 mag piston. IF there truely is no such thing as a OEM 31avs magnesium piston, let's lock this thread so nobody else gets confused with wrong part numbers. Thanks for all the info.

28 avs magnesium, comes with rings pn#796155
33 avs magnesium pn#794124 not sure if it comes with rings- was told so but havn't ordered any.
Is there a .010 or .020 over 31avs mag piston?

just checked your part number 791937, that's the 31avs aluminum piston, not magnesium.
