Chassis / Re: No sure how to set up the front axle/spindles

Don't use the stock parts. Weld the go kart spindles to a piece of 1x2 tubing. Weld the tubing into the chassis.
What thickness of 1x2 tubing do most peoole use for their front axle? 0.120"

So i hear that there will be 2 mowchines with chevy 350's in this years race during horse thief festival.  Unfortunately i don't think my mowchine will be ready or that i will even be able to make it to Knox for this years race.

So i got the free mower this morning.  The engine would turn part way over and then get stuck on something.  It was a 17hp OHV.  We pulled out the spark plug to alleviate the compression but still had no luck.  pulled the mower into the shop at work and started removing the engine.  After pulling off the starter i finally saw why it wouldn't turn over... a 2" crack in the case.  So we decided to pull off the oil pan and found the connecting rod snapped in half, the counter weight broken into at least a dozen pieces and the cam shaft bent like a banana.  After a quick phone call to the wife and a trip to northern tool she now has a brand new 21 hp OHV engine and runs like a top.  If only i could swap the 12 hp flatty in the racing mower for the 17hp in the actual mower.

Could be a L120, get it and find out for sure. That would be a good one to build!
unfortunately this one will never see the surgeons table.  One of the conditions of getting it was that it was not to be used for racing.  But if the engine is good, the wife never said i couldn't swap the engines!

thanks for the quick reply.  Now that i know that i have another question.  I see that there are higher HP engines with the same CID.  can this be done to mine with simply changing the cylinder head for more compression or do i need to change out the valves also?

So i have a co-worker that got me a hook-up on a free 2006 John Deere D102.  I looked it up on John Deere's website and it says it has a Briggs 17hp.  I was wondering if it was a flat head or had an OHV.  the previous owner said the engine is seized up, but from what my buddy says, this guy isn't very smart when it comes to mechanical issues.  But if it is unsaleable, it's still a free mower i can find an engine for!

not trying to steal anyone's thunder but do you all use these on the inside or outside of your bearings?  The inner race of the bearings have 2 set screws each to lock them in.  Or do you all just use them to keep the chain sprocket, brake disk, and wheels from moving?

thanks,

Q.

Driveline / new axle rusting

This is my first build so it is going pretty slow so far.  I have my rear axle installed and am currently waiting on my front spindles until i continue.  I have notices some light surface rust on my axle.  Is this normal, and if so what do you all do to remedy this.  Paint/clearcoat, or just don't worry about it?

the rear cross member will be approximately 5-6" behind the rear axle and the front cross member will be approximately 6-7" in front of the front axle.  I am welding my front axle to the frame and the square tubing to the frame as well.

Chassis / chassis stiffness question
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:03:41 pm »
I started my build with a 1988 Rally lawn mower.  the frame is a U shape that is open at the top with a 1-2 inch lip at the top.  It seemed to be fairly sturdy when moving around(didn't seem to twist very much).  there was a spot for the battery that was countersunk about 1/2" lower than the rest of the frame.  This area was just forward of my 700 tranny and was getting in the way of the tranny pulley.  after cutting this piece out and welding in a new flat panel flush with the rest of the frame there now seems to be a lot of twisting in the frame now.  when i pick it up, it now flexes about 2-3" from one corner to the other.  I plan to put 1 1/2"x1 1/2" square tubing inside on both sides with cross members on the front and rear, and possibly somewhere in the middle.  is this common with this type of frame and would this be a good solution to remedy my current situation?

is that in a good or bad way that you know the name?  ha ha... i'm his son.  I keep trying to convince him to let me borrow one of his snowmobile engines for the race but he won't let go of one.
