Tom- Thanks for the kudos!  Some days are long, but the effort is worth it!  The fair people were great to work with and many of them were out there the whole day with us  And, they gave us the best perk ever- an air conditioned trailer with comfy couches to rest on!   :woo: :woo: Can't wait until this year!! ;)

Coffee Shop / Re: Track Safety
« on: October 26, 2011, 10:23:09 pm »
Let's clarify a bit about why there is a need to try to improve safety on the track.  There is not a need to "train" staff to properly use signals, there is not a need to "train" drivers to understand signals, there is not a need for more "experience" on the part of the drivers.  We have observed and heard about incidents involving seasoned veterans who are good racers.  Extra flagger and lights have been used with little improvement.  The issue is the fact that mower speeds are increasing leaving less room for error and more need for instant alert of track hazaards.  RIIs are impractical since suddenly stopping a mower without a driver anticipating it could lead to even bigger track issues for that driver and the ones around him.

"Beating" a driver after he runs through a red flag for a second time does not undo the potential damage he/she did running through the first red flag.  The same is true for DQing a driver.  And, its great to think that someone would of course stop if they saw a body on the track, but reaction times vary and it requires a driver to see that body with enough time to stop.  The attempt through this dialog is to come up with a way to ensure that drivers are successfully alerted to a situation immediately.

Dry erase boards aren't going to resolve the line up issues.  The initial start is not the problem.  The difficulty is getting everyone quickly lined back up in the proper order following a caution.

Tom- I would need to double check frequency, but I am reasonably sure ARMA has the radios they need to do the type of broadcast Tommy suggested.

There is no easy answer, just some well thought out options to consider.  I am sure I can safely speak for all ARMA staff when I say that we feel there is a need to make improvements that would make the track a safer place for racers and track workers.  And, we will continue to look into what we can do to ensure that.

As the person who tached mowers this weekend (and several other weekends), allow me to clarify for those who were not with us or who have been unable to attend races so far this year.  Mod-X-R, Super Stock and J/P machines are all tached the same way.  It is understood that the stock engines in these machines will reach a point where the governor has been stretched to its limit and briefly rise above its final settling point.  When a machine tachs over 3650 we do wait several seconds and watch (as I did this weekend).  When it drops to 3650, and returns above 3650 multiple times (as the mower we are discussing did), it is disqualified.  The same is true for mowers that quickly rise to 3780 or 3800 and remain there.  Over is over.  As others have implied, it is not the tech inspector's responsibility to make a machine legal, it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that what they bring meets the rules for the class.  As small as an advantage of 10 rpm seems, it is an advantage in a class where mowers are so closely prepared.  Our goal is not to take points from those who finished well, our goal is to ensure that everyone is competing on as level of a playing field as we can make it.  This way we everyone can come, compete and have a good time!

Well, we made out o.k. all in all!  No great flood damage, even the stream stayed where it belonged!!  But- bad winds and sideways rain.  And then, the power went out at dawn Sunday morning.  It finally came back on late this afternoon.     I found out that I do not make a good Amish woman!   ;) Still keeping our other east coast friends in my prayers.  There are so many who are worse off than we are!!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their phone calls today to check on us.  We appreciate all of the good thoughts!  It looks like the heaviest part of the storm is passing through now and will continue to do so for the next five hours or so.  Not sure how I like riding this out during the nightime hours, but I don't think Irene cares!! We've had reports of tornadoes touching down on the eastern banks of Maryland, but nothing confirmed yet.  But, on a positive note- nothing in the house is flooding and the power is still on!  Keeping my fingers crossed for safe passage through the night into tomorrow.  We hope the storm passes quickly over all of the other states on its way out to sea and that everyone stays safe!

I'm sure Tommy will post on here shortly, but I am going to guess he made out o.k.  He lives out on "the island" on the east side of Virginia.  His big problem will be that "lil storm" hanging out in the Atlantic right now! :omg:

Felt it down at school today.  It shook pretty good for what seemed like quite awhile.  It interrupted our emergency procedures planning meeting!  Gotta love the irony!!

Hope all the Virginia racers make out o.k.!

We are scheduled to race Sunday at Mardela Speedway near Salisbury MD. but  if the weather is not good , would you consider a couple murrays and a huffy for show?  We are about 1 hr away.

ARMA will be hosting a national points race at the Montgomery County Fair on August 12th this year.  We will run all nine ARMA classes and others as needed.  You really are not that far from some great racing and tracks.  There will be local level races run at the Carroll County Fair and Cecil County Fairs as well.  The first Maryland event this year will be held at Chesapeake Harley Davidson in Darlington on April 17th as part of their 2011 Open House.  And, the Chesapeake City track will be running monthly.  Check out www.golawnmowerracing.com for more information about other upcoming races as they are posted.  We look forward to seeing you!

Thanks!

O.k.- here's a question for you all.  If you had to chose one U.S. president as your "favorite", regardless of party affiliation, who would it be?  Why?  I would like to take some of the results into school tomorrow to share with my fifth graders.  No bashing please- everyone is welcome to their opinion!!   ;)

We wish we could have joined everyone for some southern hospitality and great racing, but it just didn't work out.  We know that it will be a super event.  It is always heartening to see lawn mower racers come together to support a good cause.  Safe travels and racing to all who are attending!  We will see everyone soon- Puxatauney Phil says spring is on the way!!  :woo: :woo:

I would like to THANK the great folks at TC MOTORSPORTS for all their hospitality.  I feel the build clinic was a great success with over 25 new racers attending. I hope this area continues to grow and I am confident that we have the go to people there to help make it happen. Again THANKS for all you do !!!!!

I still don't know if you could be trusted not to break a trophy girl Ed.  I seem to recall a race where you tried to launch your mower up into the stands just to meet one!   :omg:

Sorry we missed you in Indiana!  But, I am glad to see you got the chance to get up close and personal with the Jesse James truck Paul owns!  ;) Check on the www.golawnmowerracing.com site for some information about our Illinois group.  They will be having several more events yet this year.  The River Rats are a great group and can help you on a local level.  We will be returning to the area this year for our year-ending finals.  Our hosts in Jonesboro, IL are determined to make this year's event even better than last!
