Driveline / Re: The "NEW" 700's out there
« on: May 19, 2016, 01:58:57 pm »
I believe the Pro Gear Tranny's are made outside of the United States.
I have had a couple brought to me to fix, the parts are not interchangeable and significantly different.
As far as reliability…..dunno…..the fact that they are new and were brought to me to fix does not give me a good impression.
I have heard of some complaints from drivers but have not used one myself. Parts are an issue to ....can't seem to find any. Even my local Lawn & Garden parts supplier can't find them(and they are pretty darn good).

So, with that being said.....As long as you consider it disposable, you're OK.

Hey all. New from Maryland, joining to get some pointers and a bit of help. I plan on building a mower shortly, and am pretty clear on everything but the motor. I have a truly wicked 89' KX125 race motor that is begging for a home, and I thought why not. Rules I have found on the official page didn't say anything against it, but they also didn't say anything for 2 strokes. Would this just fit into the prepared class, or unlimited? It would be great in the 12 hour endurance type races if I can manage to get a stable chain driveline, the presence of a sealed wet clutch and gearbox means no more shredded belts!

We do not use motorcycle engines in mowers here in Maryland. The rules are clearly written from USLMRA and ARMA(Available on this forum) that only a commercially available 4 Cycle Air Cooled, Gasoline engine for use with a Riding Mower or Mower related small engine motorized vehicle, can be used.

We, The Mason Dixon Lawn Mower Racing Association, will be at Jack's Small Engines in Jarrettsville MD, this Saturday April 2nd for their annual Open House. We will have a large complement of legal Racing Mowers on display and will be racing them throughout the day. If you have questions, this will be the time and place to go to get answers.

Next race is April 30th in VA and the big one for this year is May 21st.......Hyperfest 2016.  http://hyper-fest.com/
(Televised - with the Monster Energy Drifter Team, Motocross, Off Road Dirt Track, Road Race Motorcycles, Burnout Tire Massacre, car rolling/flip contest, Live Music and more....we will be racing 3 times in front of the grand stand)

And much more to come from Maryland and Virginia. We have Dates in Havre De Grace (Steppingstone Farm Museum), Laurel-Silver Spring-Burtonsville Moose lodge #658 -3 races , Howard County Farm Museum -2 races and Laplata(Charles Co Fair) this year as well as many in VA. We have 10 high profile car shows that we will have displays set up at too.

RC, I have faith that You & your son are going to do very well this year with us at MDLMRA....just a note, 1st race is April 2nd at Jack's Small engines in Jarrettsville.
I'm only a call away and you know where to find me....in the man cave! lol.  I am working on the groups' Jackie Andrews Tribute racer right now(older box style Sears Craftsman). I am taking my time to think things out, making everything clean ,neat and serviceable. and it coming along slowly but rock strong...I added a bunch of new idea's that I would like to share with you and your builds. The hood and Fender deck will be going up to Andrews Garage for pint Monday Morning. A lot of members donated parts and I almost have everything I need except rear hubs, the old ones were seized and I destroyed them yesterday trying to get them off, I ordered new ones from BMI today. . Stop by and take a peek.  This racer will be for a future female racer(to be determined).....that's what Jackie wanted before she passed. We started a fund in her name to build this racer.

We can make a list of goodies for you to bring to the track.......The list above is pretty much spot on. Trust me, it never ends....I bring everything but the kitchen sink in the trailer.....that's probably next! lol.
Tell your son we said hello and look forward to seeing him this year, as well as you too!.....APRIL 2ND!....

I did not box my L130. I made removable braces that have worked flawless, rock solid no flexing.

Coffee Shop / Honda GXV340 Vertical - Billet Flywheel
« on: January 08, 2016, 01:52:58 pm »
I will try this again, never got an answer the last time.

There are guys out there running the Honda GXV340 & 390 Vertical Shaft in CP/Mod-X Class.(I have seen this with my own eyes) What are you/They using for a billet flywheel? The ARC Flywheel for the Horizontal shaft is smaller and the crank has a different taper.

I am told the ARC rod is the same, the dipper just needs to be trimmed.

To be honest, I have built 6 STX38's,  two had twins....they don't like to handle at high speeds. I would move up to the L100 series John Deere or the older 160-180's.
I had to run and angle iron all the way up and down the hat centers on the underside, and then fabricate a cage to hold the tranny. This left little room for the drive system. Plus, its a stamped steel frame - one piece, if you screw something up,(Big Wreck) there is no fixing without major work. They make great IMOW or J/P, sometimes decent GP's if you can get it to handle - but again, a one piece stamped steel frame is bad news. I started to run into stress cracks on the fender deck all over the place.  Also the wheel base is tad bit short. And then the hood....when you break that, its over $300.00 new, and very hard to find one used. I would move on.

Thanks John!...hope the rain holds out!.....aww heck, who's afraid of a little mud!

Travis is 100% correct, look for an economical used one. This will save you much engineering time and a lot of big $$$$ in mistakes.
