Title: Introduce Yourself
Post by: Rooster on May 11, 2012, 11:38:59 am
If your new to Mower Racing or Heymow, reply here with an introduction.
Let us know where you are and what your doing.
We are not asking for "sensitive information", Knowing your location can help us help you get connected with other racers in your area!

Note: There are other "introduction" threads, if you have already replied to one of those they will be integrated in time.

OK since I'm new I will start here!   been lurking here for a few weeks, Went to a local race meet some great folks. Bought a Murry 12 hp plan to run it in SS, and build a C/P as time and mowney allow. My sights are on B/P and a big twin but not an imediate goal. loooks like we  will run 4 or 6  races a year! I have been overwhelmed with the knowledge and hospitality of this site. A big thank you to all of you..

Pooch here from Jane Lew Wv. Starting from scratch, never built a racing mower before. I found some videos on you tube and now I have the itch. I am currently on the lookout for a mower to start with, but I have no clue where to start. Hoping to find some info here and get a build underway, the down side ... there is no track near me (that I know of?).

Hello! My name is Ray Adams and I live in Mooresville, NC, Race City USA. I'm surrounded by NASCAR race teams, but never got the racing bug, until I made a trip to Joplin, MO. Some friends turned me on to mower racing and it appealed to me in a big way. You see, I have this MTD, without a mower deck, that is just begging to have something done with it. I work for an international printing press manufacturer as a field service technician, covering North America and the Caribbean, so I'm not too terribly mechanically inept and I have a modest workshop of 22' x 22'. I have built some small engine specialty vehicles, mostly for fun and some as work vehicles. My current vehicle build is a civilian version of an M274 Mechanical Mule, which I plan on sharing and asking for opinions and such. I absolutely agree with the idea of safety and I tend to over engineer everything I build, with an eye towards safety, efficiency, reliability and longevity.

rooster - we have privately owned land that we have made tracks on.  It is also used to race dirt karts and atv's setup for flat track racing.

We have only recently started racing mowers, which are my favorite to date!  currently on a stx38 build, i was given 2 - stx38s from my father inlaw who owns a jd dealership.  they were trade ins and older, so he tossed them my way.  i also have a murray with 14.5 that I have ran for 1 year that I built off of reading these threads.

I'm Eddie and live in Oklahoma.
I do not have a racing mower, and have never raced or seen an event (though I am definately no stranger to racecars, building or tracks lol)
I built a "race" mower a few years ago and planned to attend some races, however none were close enough to attend due to my home situation.
Eventually dismantled the deathtrap (never got suspension right) but have stored enough parts to build another should any races come my way.
Otherwise i'm mainly here for the wealth of info on mowers and small engines period.
Since I can't afford a tractor,i've been simply modifying my mower to handle the various jobs on a smaller scale.
One day i'll have one out there though.
Till then I use this forum to learn all I can so my next "race" mower is safer, more functional and faster.

Welcome to mower racing. You will find a wealth of info on the oppy in the briggs flathead section as far as mods go to the engine. Oppy can help ..............Oops I meant Rooster can help you on that one. He dreams oppys, breathes oppys, and lives oppys. I even heard he uses the oppy engine fan cover as a stand for his eating plate.

Your already ahead of yourself...rofl!
You do not want an FX as a beginner, and an Oppy is not legal in FX....and your Huffy is not legal in C/P which is where Oppy's live.

Sincerely ,
Oppy...Oops I mean Rooster

I even heard he uses the oppy engine fan cover as a stand for his eating plate.
That is a lie!
I use a 40 cube block & crank, had to put pulley and flywheel back on so I didn't have to eat equal amounts of food off each side of plate. You think balancing a 2 spot crank is tough, try balancing steak and taters on the end of that crank!
...fan cover wasn't tall enough and I kept hurting my neck bending over to reach the corn!

why is the huffy not legal in the c/p class? im gonna run the oppy for now to play with. no one in my area races mowers, so im hoping if i show up with it at a play day or " run what you brung" race at the kart track here, it will peak the intrest of a few people to build some of these mower cause they tell me it takes 3 to make a class. if this happens then i'll put a legal motor on it.  i use to race karts alot and have several friends who still do so i wouldnt exactly call myself a beginner, but i appreciate the concern... if nothing else, ill build a C/P mower for the girlfriend and just put the oppy on it!!

The LSMRA is in Texas, they race all over the state.

And with that ..we are getting this thread off track.....

Welcome to Heymow Clint, and to the SPort.
Read the newcomers threads and some searches on rules will answer alot of your question.
Any that you still have, feel free to post a question in the appropriate board!

Hello, my name is Mark, and I live close to Kankakee in Illinois. I've been interested in lawn mower racing for quite some time now. I would like to build one if, for nothing else, just to blast around our 3 acres of property, theres plenty of room to make an interesting track. Been in love with everything motorized all my life, when I was younger, I took a childs tricycle and put a 2 1/2 hp briggs and stratton on it, it was belt drive and went 30 mph. Glad to be here!  8)

Hello my name is Chuck Colburn, I live in Carbon Hill, AL. One of my best friends is Micheal Johnson who owns Full Throttle Speedway, I have helped him with some of the races put on between him and Bama/Tenn Mower Association and have had a blast. I helped him build his first mower and watched him build alot more.  I am a motorcycle tech. buy trade but I have alot of experiance in small engine repair, I have been trying to open me a small engine repair shop because I want to work for myself. I am also wanting to learn how to build high performance engines for go-karters, mower racers, golf carts and any other use of a performance engine. I would also like to build race mowers to sale.
I got on this fourm to learn about mower raceing for my friend but now I am wanting to know all I can to help me start my business. I would enjoy meeting all the members I can because I don't like enemies, I enjoy makeing friends

Hello everyone!! 8) new to mower racing, am going to build an IMOW class mower. have already aquired and stripped down a Yard Machine 14hp/42" (motor broke/single speed transaxle) for the base frame and body (like a more aero look) and a older Cub Cadet mower and pulled the motor and transaxle, 12.5 briggs flatty and Peerless, what appears to be 800 series (tag missing) and lots of other good parts. thinking of race prepping and flipping the transaxle, going for SAFE and light, and hopefully i can drive it fast >:D

welcome to the site. you will be best prepared by finding a group of racers close to you, and build to their rules. if you have none locally, get a set of rules from one of the national organizations, and build to a class. safety is first around here, and we dont condone street riding, or backyard bombers, or just friends racing each other in the neighborhood. with all that out of the way, you appear to have the right ideas, and you should be able to get yourself a safe racer built. enjoy the brotherhood and help on here, its second to none, :D  jim.

Hi Jut, welcome to the forum. Those old Sheraton's are popular both with the racers and collectors. What you do with it is a personal choice. If it would make you feel bad to cut up and modify a " piece of History, then restore it. However those make great little racers.

New guy here, first post.

I'm from NW ohio. Fort Jennings to be exact.

About 8-9 years ago two guys that shared a backyard started mower races in town. Soon many people in town got involved and the races were moved to the park with the park festival that was held annually. Now the races have become a great event called motor madness weekend every year in August.

Bi-centenial is coming up next week and the mower races will be held during the celebration.

I'm young but have always loved tinkering. My friend and I took a old junkyard lawnmower and stripped it down to the frame. Beefed up the steering for safety reasons and re-enforeced the frame with some crossbars welded. Strapped on a old 3.5hp push mower engine and a tether and now it does 15mph :)

my uncle has races since the beginning and has been FAST. his mower has won him many races.

My friend and I are starting another mower project. One that is more race worthy and safer.

I came here for some guidence and help.

Hey guys. I'm Rick from The Dalles, Oregon. My wife and I have been out to Wamic a couple of times to watch them run. They were kind enough to put me out on the track on a mower. I ran unbelievably slow due to paranoia (did NOT want to chance doing any damage to a mower that wasn't mine.) I've got the bug and bought a mower to build. Looking forward to learning all I can and getting back on a track!

Randy, and the other guys from the Wamic club , are great people, and will enjoy another member. i was the red supermod that took 1st on Sunday, and i race out of Estacada. we would love having you join us at a race or two in the future also.

Hello, my name is Andrew Horniman.  I am from Hutchinson Ks.  I have done different kinds of racing.    I always like a new challenge and something fun to do.  Figured this would be a awesome challenge and the opportunity to build something and race it and this is the perfect sport to do that.

Hello everyone. Names Jake and I live in Western New York. I do not race mowers or pull but I do build them to go fast for the fun of it lol. Right now my project is a 86 Murray with a 12 hp Tecumseh. I made new gears and replace the pull in the rear and was able to get 30 out of her. Now I am building a 17.5 hp Tecumseh to drop in for some more fun.

Hi Im WEASLE, I am new to the sport. I am from Missouri. I am a male......lol I have worked on mowers some here and there. I know a little about them. I weld a little and wrench a lot. I have been lurking on this site for quite a while. I have built a few mini bikes and mini choppers. There isnt a local race track anywhere around here that I am aware of. there is a guy down the road about 30 min that does have a 1/8th mile track but they are what you all call back yard bashers, but they race big kid karts. with 500cc motorcycle or 4 wheeler engines. He does know George Herrin though. I went to his track one night and saw some EC stickers and I asked if he knew George and he said he did.

I dont know what else to say. Oh I am in the process of doing a AP class mower like Squidd. I have some of it done already. it is the exact same mower as his but since there isnt a "legal" race track so I am going to be putting in a norm starr clutch with a p-91 tecumseh 90* gear box or ragb.

let me know if I need to put anything else in. thanks

Im in the wayland area.  i appreciate your willingness to help.

The main thing im looking at is the different classes.  i want to start out slow.  cheap as possible  until i get my feet wet.
Where do i start?  what is a good mower to find and what modifications am i going to need to do.  i have read alot of posts on here about chassis builds and they look pretty involved.  the main thing is i want it to be safe and built right.

From what i've seen and read here, the MTD box chassis works really well and as you get more into it easy to upgrade. Also seems to be a lot of them out there to be had cheap. Glenn (2nstoys) has some really nice mowers, he's a good one to talk to.

Im pretty sure i know what style your talking about.  would the stock trans and engine be ok to start with or what would you start with as far as upgrades.

If you look at Georges build http://www.heymow.com/index.php?topic=1613.0 this is the best place to start. As far as the tranny goes, stock probably wont last long, (not knowing whats in it) best to find like an 800 series peerless transaxle or 700 series transmission, with the 700 you would have to run a kart style live axle and chain to trans.
The engine (again not knowing what it is) should be able to be used depending on class.

New guy here from Fort Pierce FL. I have done my fair share of custom builds but I wanted to try something new. What better way then lawn mower racin. I am currently employed at the nuclear power plant as a utility worker but only as a temp. I only work the outages waiting for a full time job to open up. I also help advertise for my folks company Costal Embroidery and Hat Comp. They can pretty much do anything that you can think of from screen printing to banners cozies hats anything really. I’m looking to run at the Avon Park track and they go by the USLMRA rules. I’m not a 100% sure on how to build a mower to be able to compete with these guys and ladies and stay within the rules. I have a Scotts mower that I was thinking of using but don’t know if that’s something that I should use. Let me know what you think. I’m looking forward to the build and to get to know you guys.

I have not seen their schedule, so I do not know if they have any winter racing.
I would definately go look at some mowers before you start to take your mower apart.
Welcome to the site.

Just a tip, if you are going to be asking build questions on here, there is a huge bank of knowledge on here. Do your best to use the search tool next to the home button in the blue bar on the top of the homepage. I have found in the past that if you search and get a better knowledge of what you are working on it will generally yield better answers from the 'gurus'. Then you can explain what you have found on your own and they/we can have a better idea of what you are trying to do. Thus giving you a better answer

We drag race in Mid Missouri we race 160 foot strip and run it about 45 or so. we did run a 200 foot when we first started but we slowed shortened the track because we felt we where goin to fast to be racing on just streets, so for safety we shortened it to 160.

Hello to all who enjoy this site.  I'm not new to the site, but never did introduce myself when I joined.  Have been racing about three years here in SC and its the most fun I've had with my clothes on.  I'm currently racing an older model Craftsman with a stock 18 Vanguard and am building a 21 Vanguard.  It won't be stock.  I've raced at several tracks in SC, with two SOMA  sanctioned and three independent that race karts and mowers.  Would love to find others in the central SC area.  I'm Bobby and race #55.  A short plug for those who maintain this site - keep up the great job!!
Remember this, race hard but race safe.

I will admit I still got a lot to learn and that is why I am here on this site. Got into the sport kinda by a challenge decided to build one and was hooked ever since. Plus I was looking for a cheap way to have fun without getting into trouble due to being a college student. We have a local races around here but the only classes we have are SS classes due to the type of tracks we have and safety reasons. Wouldn't mind one day watching the big boys race and maybe work my way up to be able to race with them.

Hi all....my grandkids and a few friends call me "pop pop"....Dave works fine as well!! :D
I'm an old fart....:censored: near 63....I have a love of all things mechanical and inparticular anything with wheels!
I've only been to one lawn mower race about 7 years ago in Cedarville south Jersey.I couldn't believe that you could make a Lawn mower go 45 mph!!!! :woo: :D
Well.....I've had a notion ta bild me one...although it wont be one I can race in sanctioned lawnmower races....it'll have a horizontal shaft clone motor probably displacing at least 420 cc.
It'll look like a cross between a gokart and a small rider.
>>VIDEO IS ON A ROAD< RIDER HAS NO GEAR ON> <DELETED> hope this link comes through OK.
That young man gave me the inspiration to build something as cool as he did!!
At anyrate I have a small weld shop with some machine shop equip. in it......I hope to get on my build sometime in mid to late august
That's about it for now!!! :D

Relatively new to mower racing.  I have been viewing heymow forum for sometime now. I am finally going to pull the trigger and build a racing mower.   I have been garden tractor pulling for several years, but I am looking for something else to do now.  My wife is behind this as she thinks it will  be more fun to watch than gardentractor pulling.   A local racetrack promoter is looking to add lawn mower racing to his venue.    I'm looking at the rules and pictures of other mowers trying to decide what to build.  I have raced go karts and stock cars in the past, so I know just enough to be dangerous. hahaha.  So far tis forum has been very helpful.   Thanks
I would also like to mention that I'm located in west central Minnesota, so if anyone is interested in racing out here let me know.   Hopefully we can get regular racces in Redwood Falls Minnesota.

Hey Oldiron, I am in New Ulm, MN.  If there is anything I can help with to get you started let me know.  I have a GP and an AP that I race.  Check out the Minnesota lawn mower racing association (MNLMRA) website or look us up on Yahoo Groups or Facebook to see what we have going on.  If you are up for a bit of a drive, there is a race at Hawks Bar in Monticello, MN this Saturday where you could get some info from some of our members.

Hi all I'm Dave from Medford Oregon. I worked 13 years as a service manager for a power equipment shop. Got started racing in 2000. "Retired" in 2008. Went to go check out a race a few weeks ago, and my friends asked if I wanted to hop on their extra mower and run in the class. After my first place finish in the main, I'm officially sucked back in. Now working on a mower for the first time in a few years. Seems a lot more fun this time around.

Hi. My name is Dennis and I live in willows california. I've never ridden a racing mower or watched a race but I've got some land and a few friends who would like to build some low buck mowers to race around for fun. Great site and I hope to learn as much as possible.

Hey everyone my name is Matthew fortson and I am from Rincon Georgia. I recently received a couple lawn mowers from a man nearby who used to do tractor pulls before they stoped holding them. He gave me two lawn mowers for fifty dollars and a destruction of an old hang out that I built that was visible from his driveway. It was a Murray rear engine and a Murray 83 and I love that one. I started the build and did some research and discovered the costs of everything and that almost ruined it for me. But I will be turning 16 soon so I will be putting in an application for a job at a small engine repair shop. I am pretty handy with my hands, I enjoy this hobby and infact it's actually affected my grades due to the fact that all I think about while at school is what I'm going to do to the 83 when I get home. I would like to find someone around here that messes with this kind of stuff that I could get some tips from. I have done a pully swap on it but nothing more. I intend on removing the governor from the engine and replacing the internal components and the flywheel and as I stated earlier, I ran into a problem with the money so I have come to a stop with the engine and I am now painting. Well I have so much more to talk about but if I keep on it will end up as a life story haha. But anyway I'm so glad I have found this forum so that I could get some valuable information from some people from all over and with different experiences.

I'm Daniel Adams, I'm from Casper, Wyoming. I have never raced a lawn mower. But i do race dirt mini stocks at the dirt track here. Which are 4 clynder 2.5 liter motors. I recently found a 1980 mtd mower with a 125cc kalaskawki in it. And the idea of racing is the first thing that came to me. They race mowers in a few small towns around my state. And there I know I could get in to it more and learn. Having a big truck I feel I can bring my regular racecar and the mower to the races that run both. Thanks for the awesome threads on this site I hope to read and learn a lot more about this sport to someday be pro like the guys I see on the speed channel.

I am Derek from New Mexico.  I think it would be cool to build a racing lawnmower in the future, but Its not practical for me at the moment.

Instead my summer/fall project is building a hot rod couch type thing (see attached picture for my sketch) but Im thinking the most cost effective way to set up my powertrain is with parts from a lawnmower and I have questions about the best way to set everything up and I figured this is probably the best place to come to ask about lawnmower parts.

Hi, I am William Baker from Torrington, WY. I am new to mower racing all together. I have two old Montgomery ward 3 speeds with 12 H.P. Briggs and Stratton. I have a old wizard chassis, with tranny and an old international garden tractor this one will be setup for pulling. The reason for getting into this is for family fun. Its also a good way to teach my kids the basics they need before they leave home. I was pointed this way from a local tractor pull. They say this is family fun and can be very competitive. So here I am. I'm going to read through the forums and ask allot of questions that have been asked before. So bare with me. I haven't found a local mower racing club or any club dealing with it, but I could be looking in all the wrong areas. I do have a mechanics background. By the way my wife will be racing the first one. My boys will be racing in the junior series which I believe is a mower without blades and very little mods like exhaust and air intake if I am correct.
