When i order spindles for my mower, do i need front wheel hubs? I am asking this because the wheels i'm looking at have a 3 hole bolt pattern, and i was wondering how i fasten the wheel to the spindle. My theory is: spindle, hub, wheel.

it's a five speed with reverse and neutral. This mower is just a fun build, but my plan is to keep it in fifth for it's life.

Just to clarify, a cent. clutch can go right on the engine shaft granted it is the right bore size and this will engage when it reaches a certain rpm?

Thank you for the info. As of now my plans are to move the engine back a few inches and fabricate the new trans up a few inches and run a chain.

I have an MTD mower with a Briggs 12hp motor/vertical shaft. I just took this out of an old Craftsman snowblower:

I plan on having the pulley vertical as well so it will line up with the motor pulley. My question is, can I run a centrifugal clutch on the motor shaft serving as the front pulley and run a chain to the rear pulley on the trans? Is there a centrifugal clutch that can hold a belt, not a chain?

Hey guys,

I'm Tyler, 20 yrs old and just acquired 2 free mowers! 1984 MTD, and a 1986 Montgomery Ward Indutrial. I plan on making the 84 a racer to play around with and using the 86 for parts. They both have 12hp b&s motors. What tips do you have on making this mower fast? Pulley sizes? Right now i'm looking for tires. The factory ones are 15-6-6 on the front. I'd like go down a size or two and have them on all four sides. Anyways, I'll be posting lots of pictures and asking alot of questions so please help me out! Thanks!
