It came to my attention that some of you southern boys have never even seen a sled. I thought I would do a community service post for yall down south.
Sledding in norhtern maine is amazing, if you have the cash and want a great vacation, check it out. It is the last legal speed. Trails are groomed flat, wide and are fast if you want them to be. Sleds range from 70hp kids sleds to 165hp stock sleds to turbocharged sleds upward of 500hp. There is alot of resistance to overcome so the hp numbers don't line up to any other motorsports. For example, my sled is a 2006 Yamaha Apex. I have modified everything but the motor. It has 150hp version of an R1 bike engine. In a bike, this motor would send it to 170 pretty easy. In a sled, 120 is the max. As far as accelleration though, a sled will out accellerate a bike everytime. They use CVT clutching so they are always shifting out to accellerate and allways on the powerband. My sled is a 4 stroke, Yamaha has made no other kind for years. Other manufactuers use 2stroke for most of the sleds. They will run 7-8500 to make the peak power, my sled runs 10,600 peak. Again with the resistance, a bike with my motor, 30-50mpg, my sled gets 13-16mpg. The other reason for this is the bikes feewheel, sleds are almost always under power and run a constant 5-6000 at most any speed.
If you get to ride them, you will be hooked, There is nothing quite like it, 110 down a 6mile lake, riding balls out up a bumpy powerline or that cold moon lit ride through the tisty trails on the wood roads. Again, there is nothing that accellerates like a sled. Just an idea of how fast a sled can accellerate, Ice racing WORLD RECORD 4.60sec. 146 mph in 660 ft. WORLD RECORD 3.89 136 mph in 500 ft grass 1st in the 3's in 500 grass drag. These are twin turbocharged 4stroke yamaha mod sleds. A stock class firecat with 140hp would run 5.3-5.5. Radar runs at 1000ft this same sled would show 103-106. Those turbo 4strokes will top out around 170ish in 1000ft. Record at bonneville for a sled is 210.
now for some pictures, this is my apex, lengthened and slightly altered in about a hundred different ways.
