Chassis / Re: axle beam length
« on: November 01, 2009, 05:29:50 am »
Try drawing it up on graph paper or a CAD system. Iam currently drawing mine on graph paper found alot out doing this. But Iam also going from scratch and alot of from here. Eraser is so much easier than grinding.

A mock up will work to seeing how you have most everything.
Just some thoughts for you.

What length Hiems are you running on the front axle spindle? The ones I want to use for my axle design have a thread length of 1-1/2 " if my math is right I will run out of room. Iam looking @ the one from McMaster-Carr Part# 60645K161. Will EC sell me the correct length heims. Or will these work?

Thanks

Tires / Re: 13" Tire axle center line
« on: October 22, 2009, 05:57:19 pm »
you could ask around on here, im sure somebody with the exact tire and wheel choice would be willing to do a quick measurement, realizing the chassis is probably the cheapest part of the build, its logical to start there first!

Chassis is the most important (other than saftey) part of building a racer from the frame up. In my humble opinion.

Tires / Re: 13" Tire axle center line

Well logically yes you are correct half of 13 is 6.5. But when it comes to tires/wheels logic goes out the window. My 13" tires on 6" rims sit at about 5.75" to centerline @ 10 lbs of air drop to 4lbs and I have a wee bit less than 5". The brand and style of tire will make these measurements different too. Best thing to do is get them in hand, mounted and measure them. THEN build your frame.

Yup logic went out the window...I measured my 15" on my cub that I mow with It was around 6-1/2" center line. Then I measured a 15" on my bench and it measured 7-3/4 " @ 14lbs inflation.
So I will get 13" tires mounted then check my center line. Gonna run turf savers.
Ever feel like the more we try to go forward on a new build the more questions come up ? I think I find what not to do before I find what to do LOL.
Some say its fun I say its not.
Thanks for the input.

Tires / 13" Tire axle center line
« on: October 22, 2009, 05:14:54 pm »
Am I right in thinking a 13" tire mounted on a 6" rim would be @ or close to 6-1/2" from the ground to my axle center line? I need to be sure for correct frame height. Also should I build in tolerance to stay legal with different tire pressures?
 Thanks for any input.

Chassis / Re: Hiems vs. rod ends question
« on: October 16, 2009, 06:44:47 pm »
heim ends are basically a generic name for rod ends, heim is a company that makes rod ends, as wellas a host of other companies!

Thanks Jerb, I thought they were the same but needed to make sure. Once again the forum comes thru.

Are Hiems the same as rod ends?

Chassis / Re: Front axle set-up
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:58:18 pm »
Its long enough to allow the front brakes to be used and if without use a rim from 6.5 to 7.25 and still be right about 38" sidewall to side wall. Folks you must understand I cannot give blueprints or indetail measurements on this. I did not design it 100% its a combination of all my knowledge and then throw in Carrol's kart and chassis knowledge and its the end result. I do feel its the one piece that makes the whole chassis do what it does in the manner it does it. Its the whole key to a good handling chassis.
It is 1x2 tubing though

Yes I understand completely. But what is in this forum and a little brain power it can be made. Dont get me wrong if had the extra coin I would buy one to.
Thanks George, your input on this site has helped me a ton.

Maybe George will give his blueprints for the EC front axle. I will not hold my breath for this to happen.
It is a great design. Bet it took alot of brain cells to create it.
Still working on my own design, and it will not be for anyone but me. It is a chore but that happens with no money and mad skills....ok maybe some skills.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I gotta go adjustable. Wish I had a blueprint of one. Hate designing things, although I have many times.

Chassis / Front axle set-up
« on: October 09, 2009, 07:26:23 pm »
Will the same geometry work as stated in George's post "Understanting E.C. Dist. Mower Front Axle Geometry" in a chassie with offset built with L spindels and a 2x2 tube axle? Plan on 1-3/8" O.D. with 3/4" Bore I.D to hold the spindels to the axle. Can I fab this up non adjustable and set all the geometry as a good handleing mower?  I know I can buy axle set-ups but would like to go homemade.
 Constructive criticism is welcome.
 Hope this makes sence.
 Thanks,
 Zeus

How much offset are you allowed.. I would run the maximum offset. you will be surprised how much of a difference that makes.

Not sure how much offset is allowed. I have a bunch of rule questions for the tracks I want to run. Thats why for now my build is on hold.
I think they are currently getting organized as a three or four speedway circiut. Which should have a clear cut rule book.
When I find out I will try to let you know the offset max.

Zeus
P.s. Moosemountainspeedway.com is one of tracks. I was on the othernite and see they are working on a rules section. They had 1 prior to this but was very vague. I will be checking back with them.
